Partially collapsed car park demolition set to begin

Work to demolish a partially collapsed car park in Mansfield is set to begin in the next few weeks.

The top deck of the Walkden Street car park, which has been shut since February 2024 due to safety concerns, suffered "structural damage" at the end of August 2025.

Mansfield District Council said in September 2025 inspections had shown a full demolition of the site was needed "to prevent any further risk to the public and to prevent any future collapses".

The authority said on Friday - after agreements were completed with the leaseholder and the freeholder of the site - demolition work was expected to begin.

The council said the completion of the agreements meant it had "formally surrendered its lease on the site", removing future lease liabilities and responsibilities.

It added it had "worked closely" with landowners, legal representatives and other partners to secure a long-term solution following the partial collapse of the multi-storey car park.

The council said works at the site were expected to commence in the next few weeks and it was expected to take about 16 to 18 weeks to complete.

Businesses on Stockwell Gate would remain open and accessible throughout the demolition works, it added.

James Biddlestone, chief executive of Mansfield District Council, said: "Following the collapse of Walkden Street Car Park, our priority has always been the safety of residents, visitors and businesses, while securing the best possible long-term outcome for the council and taxpayers.

"I am pleased that we have now reached a final agreement which provides certainty and allows this matter to be brought to a conclusion.

"It removes significant future liabilities for the council and enables demolition work to begin."
