Headless horse and dead foal dumped in village

A decapitated horse and a dead foal have been found dumped in "suspicious circumstances", prompting an appeal for information from the RSPCA.

The remains were discovered by a member of the public down a byway in Claverley, Shropshire, on Sunday.

The animal charity said the female horse, which appeared to be underweight with long hooves, was found in three pieces and had been covered with a tarpaulin.

"We don't know how the pony or mare died but the circumstances are clearly a potential cause for concern, and we are looking into what may have happened here," a spokesperson added.

Sarah Guest, one of the RSPCA's animal rescue officers who attended the scene, said they also could not locate a microchip.

The animals appeared to have been dead for longer than when they were reported to have been dumped, she added.

Anyone with information has been urged to contact the charity.

Shropshire Council has also been contacted for the removal of the horses.
