A unique hoard of artefacts depicting prehistoric life has received one of the highest honours available to museums in England.

The Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery's prehistoric exhibits were among nine collections recently awarded designated status by Arts Council England.

The collection spans thousands of years, including tools and artefacts, such as Bronze Age log boats and finds from Must Farm near Whittlesey - the settlement often compared with Pompeii.

Sarah Wilson, a heritage manager at Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery, called it a "landmark moment" for the museum and the city.

"This award is a source of immense civic pride and strengthens our ability to share this remarkable heritage with residents, schools, researchers and visitors."

The designation scheme, established in 1997, highlights outstanding collections of national and international importance across England. The designation panel at Arts Council England made its decision at its most recent meeting - which is held twice a year.

Durham Cathedral's archive of a medieval monastery and the University of Liverpool's science fiction collections were among the exhibits recognised.

Darren Henley, chief executive of Arts Council England, said Peterborough museum showcased "remarkably preserved objects that represent the continuous human occupation" of the city.

Andrew Pakes, the city's Labour MP, said it was a "proud day" for the museum.
