A helpline has been set up for businesses and residents affected by a blast at an industrial complex in Essex.

Flames spread through units at Highlands Farm, near Rettendon, and caused a fertiliser store to explode on Friday.

Companies based there have been offered emergency grants and temporary accommodation by Chelmsford City Council.

Liberal Democrat leader Stephen Robinson said it had been a "shocking event" for people in the area.

Fire crews have remained at the scene in Southend Road monitoring hotspots since Friday.

They were first called there at 16:50 BST. The unit housing fertiliser exploded about an hour later.

The city council said it had no news on when people would be allowed back into their homes and businesses, as it announced details of its helpline.

Firms that had been displaced could access short-term workspace at the Civic Centre in Chelmsford, it added.

They may also not have to pay business rates if their premises has been badly damaged or destroyed.

"I would like to reassure residents and businesses that Chelmsford City Council is here to support you," Robinson said.

"We fully understand the need for effective help for those whose homes and livelihoods have been directly impacted by this shocking event."

Four firefighters were taken to hospital with minor injuries suffered while battling the flames, and a further 16 were treated for issues including hearing loss.
