Seven flights had to be diverted and 17 held in the skies above Manchester Airport after a man trespassed on the airfield.

It happened at about 23:21 BST on Friday and the airfield had to be closed for 15 minutes, while police attended and arrested the man.

Greater Manchester Police said: "We responded to reports of male who had been located air-side at Manchester Airport.

"This appears to be mental-health related and the man has been taken to hospital for assessment."

Part of an airfield fence, which was damaged, has been fixed, the airport added.
