More attempted murder arrests after ship crew attack

Two more people have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after three ship workers were attacked.

Police said the incident involved a large group and took place on 31 July at Richmond Terrace, near Avonmouth Docks in Bristol. One of the victims remains in a critical condition in hospital.

An 18-year-old man was arrested on Thursday and a 28-year-old man was arrested earlier, bringing the total number of arrests to six.

It comes after Kurtis Ranklin, 45, from Southmead, was last week charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and a 17-year-old boy was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Avon and Somerset Police said one of the victims had been discharged from hospital after receiving medical care.

The three victims are Filipino nationals and ship workers who recently docked at Avonmouth.

Two other people, a 19-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman, were previously arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and assisting an offender respectively, and remain on conditional bail.

Ranklin has been remanded in custody and will appear at Bristol Crown Court on 4 September. The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is also due in court on that date.

Det Insp Kate Bettel said: "We know this incident has left people in the area shocked and we wish to reassure them that our investigation is progressing.

"At the centre of this investigation there is a man who remains critically ill in hospital, and we are doing all we can to provide his family with as much information as we can about what happened," she said.

She urged the public to come forward with information, which was especially important due to "the seriousness of the injuries sustained".
