Prof Martin Jones has left his role as vice chancellor with immediate effect, the University of Staffordshire has said

The vice chancellor of a West Midlands university has stepped down from his position over health concerns.

Prof Martin Jones has served the University of Staffordshire in his role since 2022, but on Wednesday it was announced he would be taking a "career break".

A spokesperson for the university said Jones would step down with "immediate effect due to health concerns".

They added: "He is taking a career break to focus on his wellbeing and family before pursuing new opportunities within the higher education sector."

The university also added its appreciation for Jones' "contribution and leadership" during his time at the university.

Commenting on what is next, the spokesperson said: "The board's priority is ensuring a smooth transition and continued delivery of the university's strategy under the leadership of interim vice chancellor Prof Philip Plowden.

"A process to recruit a permanent vice chancellor will begin in due course."
