The National Trust is offering a rare opportunity to live in a 16th Century farmhouse neighbouring one of Wales's most significant historic homes.

Tenants residing at the three-bed farmhouse Glan yr Afon will be asked to keep a "watchful eye" on Tŷ Mawr Wybrnant, in Conwy.

The unfurnished farmhouse sits in the heart of Eryri National Park - also known as Snowdonia - and features a stream running past the front of the property and a private garden. Rent is set at £700 per month.

Tŷ Mawr Wybrnant is the birthplace of Bishop William Morgan, whose 1588 translation of the Bible into Welsh played a crucial role in safeguarding the language. Tŷ Mawr Wybrnant means big house, fast-flowing stream.

Morgan, who was of humble origins, rose to become the Bishop of Llandaf and later St Asaph.

He died in 1604 in relative poverty at his home parish of St Asaph.

National Trust Cymru said it was looking for tenants who could provide an informal local presence.

"We are looking for someone who values the special character of the setting, and who can help us care for Tŷ Mawr Wybrnant by being a responsible and supportive neighbour," said the National Trust's Ceri Williams, general manager for Gogledd Orllewin Cymru (North West Wales).

Applications to rent to property are open until 10 May. The farmhouse is currently unoccupied and new tenants could move in within the month.
