Cash sought for A15 and the 'road to nowhere'

A stretch of the A15 could be widened under plans.

Lincolnshire county councillors are asking for a share of a £152m government transport grant to improve "antiquated" roads.

Cash could also go towards completing the Spalding Western Relief Road, which has been described as "the road to nowhere".

Proposals will be put to Andrea Jenkyns, the mayor of Greater Lincolnshire, who handles the funding from the Department for Transport.

Councillor Christopher Reeve welcomed news that the A15 could be improved, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Under the plans, £7.5m would be allocated towards widening the road from Caenby Corner to County Boundary Road.

Reeve told the meeting: "The roads are quite antiquated for the size of vehicles these days and it's one that's really in need of extra funding."

The Spalding Western Relief Road was designed to relieve traffic through the town, but only one of three parts has been built.

The first section, including a bridge spanning a railway line, was completed in October 2024, but ends abruptly in a field.

Councillors are seeking £41.3m from the Greater Lincolnshire Combined County Authority to go towards the estimated £69m cost of completing the 4-mile (6.5km) road.

Other proposals include £1.2m for improvements to the A15 Riseholme Lane junction, £4.5m to upgrade the A16 Crowland roundabout and almost £2m towards a cycle and pedestrian path between Sleaford and Ruskington.

Councillor James Bean said money should be spent on the Caistor Top junction, which he argued was an accident blackspot.

Sam Edwards, head of highways and economic infrastructure at the county council, said a study had been commissioned to "understand the options" and whether a roundabout or traffic lights were needed.

Projects must be approved by the mayor's transport committee before going forward.
