Anyone breaching the beach ban with their pet could be fined £100

Dog owners are being reminded beach exclusion zones will be reintroduced next week.

A section of Sunderland's Roker beach and a stretch at nearby Seaburn will again have a ban on pets from 1 May until 30 September.

Anyone caught breaching the restrictions faces a fixed penalty fine of £100, or up to £1,000 if matters proceed to court.

Some areas at the two sites will remain open to dogs.

The exclusion zones have been operating each year since 2019.

Sunderland City Council said the bans followed calls from people in the city for action on issues such as dog fouling and littering.

Eighteen fixed penalties were issued last year, slightly fewer than the 21 in 2024.

Peter McIntyre, executive director of economy and place at the council, described the city's beaches as beautiful, adding the ban would "keep them clean and tidy for all our residents and visitors to enjoy".
