Officers said the convent had been told the cash was needed as part of a police investigation and it had left the money in a specific location for collection.
Police said two men were arrested in the UK on Thursday. They are investigating whether other churches or organisations have been targeted since 12 May.
It said anyone who had received a suspicious phone call or other unconfirmed contact from the police should contact the force urgently.
