Millwall fought back from two goals down to draw with Lincoln City in an action-packed encounter.

The visitors, who had played for over an hour with nine men in Wednesday's 6-0 defeat by West Ham, took the lead after 25 seconds through Andrei Coubis' fine low strike from 18 yards and Rob Street doubled their advantage when his shot went through the legs of goalkeeper Filip Marschall.

Freddie Draper's header hit the post and Dom Jefferies placed his shot against the same upright on the rebound as the Imps missed great chances to make it 3-0 after the break before Kyrell Lisbie scored on the rebound after his initial attempt was blocked.

Jake Cooper scrambled a leveller when Lincoln failed to clear a corner and the visitors ended the game with 10 men when Ayodeji Elerewe was sent off for a professional foul on Zak Lovelace.

The Lions, who would have climbed back into the top eight with a win, could not force any late drama as the away side held out through four minutes of time added on.

The point ends Lincoln's run of three straight defeats but they will be ruing the chances they missed which would have put the game to bed.

Honours even after controversial decisions

Unsurprisingly given the nature of the defeat and the tight turnaround, Lincoln made six changes from the side that began Wednesday's thumping loss.

They made the perfect start when Romania international Coubis struck a crisp shot from the right-hand edge of the area into the far corner to give them a first goal since 19 September.

Their second goal had more than a hint of fortune about it though as Reeco Hackett handled the ball as he looked to bring it down before crossing it in. That said, the hosts had chances to clear before Sonny Bradley teed up Street to score his first league goal of the campaign.

Millwall made changes at the break including taking off goalkeeper Marschall - who had clattered into a post prior to Lincoln's second - for Max Crocombe.

They game should have been out of sight soon after the restart but Draper's header thudded back off the post and Jefferies somehow shot against the upright with the goal at his mercy.

Lisbie pulled one back with his first for the club, but moments later Lincoln again missed a great opportunity for their third when Hackett could not convert on the rebound after Draper's strike was saved.

Cooper bundled in an equaliser shortly after George Wickens had made a fine stop to keep Lisbie out and Elerewe was then perhaps unfortunate to be shown red by Ruebyn Ricardo for blocking off the run of Lovelace as he looked to chase on to a Romain Esse through ball.

Millwall visit Portsmouth next Saturday (12:30 BST) while Lincoln welcome struggling Burnley (15:00 BST) later that same afternoon.

'Only positive is we didn't lose' - reaction

Neil: 'Probably as poor as we've been in my time here!'

Millwall boss Alex Neil told BBC Radio London:

"Probably as poor as we've been first half in the time that I've been here. The only positive I'll take from it is we didn't lose.

"We didn't have any fighting spirit in the first half - we lost every header and every duel. We didn't deal with anything that we normally do particularly well.

"It's a frustrating one. From a performance point of view I'm disappointed but the fact that we did manage to come back and didn't lose it a positive."

(On the handball prior to Lincoln's second goal) "The whole stadium shouted for a handball. Not only is it a handball but he stops the ball running out of play. My question would be if he was on the goalline and he stopped the ball going in the net would he say it was accidental? I very much doubt so. It was a poor decision."

Lincoln head coach Chris Cohen told BBC Radio Lincolnshire:

"I'm gutted for the fans who came all the way down to south London. Amazing. I thought the performance was excellent and deservedly went into a lead.

"You can never be satisfied when you go 2-0 up and don't win the game.

"We had a couple of monster chances at the start of the second half. If you go 3-0 up then no matter where you are you feel confident you'll go on to win the game.

"The timing of the goals is everything. We have to go back and look at the goals and how we conceded them but I thought the way the boys defended the last 10 minutes with 10 men was exceptional."
