    Back on Tuesday

Another stunning Saturday on Planet Championship is over.

Goals galore, comebacks, red cards and intrigue from lunchtime til teatime - just how we like it.

Swansea have West Ham, Middlesbrough, Birmingham and West Brom breathing down their necks at the top of the pile while these are dark days in Lancashire as Preston and Burnley remain mired in the bottom three - maybe the clocks changing next week will help that.

Thanks for your company and all your messages throughout the day, we're back on Tuesday for the rearranged clash between Wolves and Portsmouth.

Enjoy your weekend, and we'll see you then!

Chris Wilder oversaw an instant return to winning ways in the space of a week after Sheffield United edged Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

Oliver Arblaster's goal early on was enough to settle the afternoon and, after the Blades were beaten at Portsmouth on Wednesday, they claimed three points while still out on the road.

    Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"It's been a really long week for us and for the supporters. I'm delighted for them and for the boys in there. They're an incredibly together group. Today's a big result for us.

"I thought we started really on the front foot and went after the opposition. The atmosphere around the place was quiet because of our performance.

"I was a bit disappointed we hadn't nudged ourselves in front a little bit more knowing it was going to come, as it did but Michael's not really had a save to make."

West Brom moved up to fifth in the Championship table after they completed a remarkable turnaround to beat Blackburn Rovers 3-2 at The Hawthorns.

Albion were 2-0 down inside 15 minutes following Andri Gudjohnsen's early brace for Rovers, but the Baggies responded through Barney Stewart and drew level courtesy of an Isaac Price penalty.

The hosts then won it when Felix Horn Myhre bundled home the ball in the closing stages.

West Brom boss James Morrison told BBC WM:

"Credit to the lads, it wasn't good for 20 minutes but we can't start games like that. We thought we were just going to walk into it after Tuesday night.

"We didn't do the basics, we took too many touches, we were too open and got punished.

"2-0 is a tough scoreline and the one thing I noticed is that we had time on our hands and it was important that we got a goal back early and we had to be patient and get to half-time.

"We had lots of chances, we could have scored four or five today. It's credit to the lads, the one strength we've got is we keep going to the end."

Tony Mowbray was bemused by the decision of the referee to award West Brom a penalty in his Blackburn Rovers side's 3-2 defeat at The Hawthorns.

Mowbray's return to his former employers was going swimmingly after 15 minutes, with Rovers 2-0 up thanks to a brace from Andri Gudjohnsen, but Albion fought back and won it late on through Felix Horn Myhre.

    Mowbray told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"I think West Brom are a good team, as their position shows. I think they chased from 2-0 very well. I don't want to be the manager who moans about officials but the penalty is a really poor decision, I think it should have been a free-kick to us.

"Sean is adamant he never pushed the guy whatsoever but it doesn't matter in a game that we lost 3-2. It's a bit disappointing I suppose as they've worked so hard this week.

"It's a bit frustrating to get nothing from the game as I think we deserved something."

The Bristol City head coach speaks after City lose 1-0 at home to Sheffield United.

Bristol City boss Michael Skubala was left disappointed by how Sheffield United out-battled his side in the Blades' 1-0 victory at Ashton Gate.

It is the fourth match the Robins have lost on home soil this term and the second time they have lost by this score-line in the space of five days.

    Skubala told BBC Radio Bristol:

"We lost too many duels in the first half, they looked too physical for us. You have to score first, we have a big chance to score and we don't.

"We weren't in the right structure for the free-kick, people haven't quite done their jobs. After that we looked a bit shaky.

"At half-time I thought 'I need to change the feel of this game' we were getting beat up too much. Teams are coming here and being more direct and we don't seem to be able to handle that at the moment."

QPR's five-game unbeaten run came to an end with a 3-0 loss at Birmingham.

Rs boss Julien Stephan has spoken to BBC Radio London:

"It's a tough result - we started the game well for 10 or 15 minutes and we had a huge chance to take the lead and we know how important that is in a game like this.

"We conceded three goals on transitions which is really unusual for us.

"We wanted to start strongly in the second half but we conceded the second goal immediately.

"We had a lack of freshness which we saw and were less efficient in many areas, but we shouldn't forget what the players have done well this season and it's only a second defeat in 11 games."

Speaking after the 1-0 win at Swansea, West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo told BBC Radio London:

"I think the players did a very good job, overall a very good performance, organised, creating chances, also luck in moments.

"Swansea are a very good team, they are fast, dynamic, it's not easy to control them but overall I think we were organised and caused a lot of problems too.

"It was a very entertaining game, very intense, it was a nice football match.

"There were some amazing saves, maybe because of my past (as a keeper) I always credit them, but they were some amazing saves (from Lawrence Vigouroux).

"I think we are building momentum. The table is important but more important is how we keep improving. I still believe there's a lot of things we should have done better."

  8. 'We had to dig deep' - Robinspublished at 18:18 BST 17 October

    FT: Derby 0-1 Stoke

    Stoke City

Speaking after the 1-0 win at Derby, the Potters first win at Pride Park in 19 years, Stoke manager Mark Robins told BBC Radio Stoke:

“We had to dig deep. We could have made it easier for ourselves if we’d had a little bit of quality but three-game weeks are especially tough, and whenever you come up against John’s [Eustace’s] teams you have to be good in possession, because they make it really hard for you out of possession.

“They showed a lot of energy, commitment and courage to try to stop us from playing, and we showed a lot of courage to try to break them down.

“We’re still a work in progress and the massive thing for me is the resilience we’re showing, a desire to win headers, and run, and make those last-ditch tackles when we have to stop crosses coming in.

“We’ve got to keep doing that, keep finding a way, and the other side will come.”

Speaking after the 1-0 home defeat to Stoke, which left the Rams second-bottom, Derby head coach John Eustace told BBC Radio Derby:

"It's a real tough one to take, I certainly don't think we deserved to lose the game.

"We asked for a reaction after Wednesday and I think we got that against a really good team.

"The most disappointing thing is the way we conceded the goal. We're not getting the rub of the green at the moment, but it will change, we have to keep believing and keep positive, the effort of the group was very good.

"Defensively I thought we were really solid and we created a few good chances going forward in the second half, but we’re in a tough period at the moment and it’s not going to be free-flowing.

“The group today were excellent, the attitude was really good and you’ve just got to keep believing and going forward.”

Bolton followed-up their midweek win at Wolves by holding promotion hopefuls Southampton 0-0.

Trotters head coach Steven Schumacher has told BBC Radio Manchester:

"It was a good game - we knew it was going to be difficult and we had to really concentrate and stick to the gameplan.

"We said we can't just sit back and let them pepper our goal and in the second half particularly I was really pleased with how brave we were.

"In the end we're pleased with a point."

Preston boss Graham Alexander reflects on defeat away at Wrexham.

Speaking after the 4-1 defeat at Wrexham Preston head coach Graham Alexander told BBC Radio Lancashire: "We have to take the result. We have to improve in both boxes, we had more than enough opportunities to score more than the one we did.

"The result is a real stinger for us, I thought we were in the game. We came and competed at a high level. The goal before half-time was a little bit unfair on us for how we competed in the first half.

"Second half I thought we had some really good moments on the counter attack at 2-1, looking back we have to take one of those - they scored two and the game runs away from us again.

"We can't defend this sort of result, but the players worked exceptionally hard we just haven't been good enough in both boxes."

Southampton kept a third successive clean sheet but were held 0-0 at home by Bolton.

Saints goalkeeper Daniel Peretz has told BBC Radio Solent:

"Disappointed because it's a home game and you want to win at home.

"We want to win the league so we know we need to win those games, especially when you are dominant so it's on ourselves but the game is done.

"We cannot win every single game but we are aiming for that, but we are at home and we are dominant so we need to win.

"Some things were missing so we will work on them."

Southampton failed to score and dropped points at home in the for Championship for the first time this season as they were held 0-0 at home by Bolton.

Saints head coach Tonda Eckert has been speaking to BBC Radio Solent:

"We tried everything to get three points but if you look at the result it's disappointing but there are still some positives to take from it.

"It was a bit open in some parts in the second half but we take it as it is and we move on.

"If we win 1-0 we all go home happy but didn't manage to put one over the line today although we had more than enough chances so you keep a clean sheet the other side and move on to the next game which is West Ham."

On the injury to Cyle Larin:

"He had a collision early on and felt something in his hamstring so asked to come off but it doesn't look too bad and we'll assess it over the next few days."

Norwich City are just one point above the Championship's relegation zone as they suffered a fifth successive league defeat.

Head coach Philippe Clement has been speaking to BBC Radio Norfolk:

"For the passion and the engagement, they gave everything what is missing is an overview in the final third, the last pass, the last shot.

"I don't like to be a broken record to repeat the same things every week but I cannot ask for anything more in terms of giving more for the club.

"If you score the first goal today, Portsmouth would have to come out and there would be more space but we made the wrong decisions with the last pass."

On the fans booing at full time:

"I'm busy with this group of players, not about (what) credit (I have) in the bank. During the game the fans were really positive and pushing the team but if there is frustration at the end we all understand it.

"I have to stay calm in the situation because if everyone panics we are not going to get the season that we want. There are still 36 games to play and it's now about taking the right lessons."

Portsmouth are up to 13th place in the Championship as a 1-0 victory at Norwich gave them back-to-back wins.

It was a Marezi penalty which earned them all three points and boss John Mousinho has told BBC Radio Solent:

"We played very well in the first half and started the second half okay - off the back of the penalty we defended really well.

"He had a long time to wait (to take the penalty) and it was a high pressure situation. I know it's a tough place to be and I was pleased he put it in the back of the net.

"The pleasing thing for me is we kept the ball out of the net without looking overly exposed.

"We're really thin on the ground at the moment, we had two goalkeepers on the bench and lost a player in the warm-up today (Colby Bishop) - he felt his knee and didn't feel quite right."

    On Keshi Anderson injury:

"He's got a hamstring tear so we're looking at 6-10 weeks out for him."

It is three successive wins in seven days for Birmingham City as they stretched their unbeaten run by seeing-off QPR 3-0 at home.

Blues boss Chris Davies has told BBC Radio WM:

"There was a real intensity about us today, I knew it would be a tough game as QPR came with a plan but the way we started and finished, it was too much for them.

"We played some good football today, what I didn't want us to do was go in the lead and almost panic and be scared by that. I thought we showe a much bigger development in our game.

"It's about continuous improvement for us. We can still play better than we did today and everything else takes care of itself from there."

    Pick of the stats

Stoke score against DerbyImage source, Shutterstock
    • Stoke City have won three successive league games away from home for the first time since a run of four in December 2005, with today their first away victory against Derby County since February 2007 (D3 L3 since).
    • With just four points through their opening 11 Championship matches so far this season (W1 D1 L0), Preston have made their worst start to a campaign at this stage since 1924-25 (3 pts for a win), holding an identical record (W1 D1 L9) that season during which they were relegated from the top-flight.
    • Liam Millar has already scored more goals (4) in seven league games for Birmingham than he managed across 36 appearances (including playoffs) for Hull in the Championship last season (3).
    • Andri Gudjohnsen scored two goals for Blackburn Rovers within the opening 12 minutes of their win against West Bromwich Albion, the earliest a player has scored a brace away from home in the Championship since November 2016 (Garath McCleary, Reading v Wigan).
    • Middlesbrough’s Will Lankshear has scored in three consecutive Championship appearances for the first time; today’s effort was his ninth in 11 league appearances this season, the most of any player, and just two fewer than he managed for Oxford United in 44 games last team (12).

They scored three goals of real conviction against a good team here today.

    FT: West Brom 3-2 Blackburn

    Charlotte Richardson
    Final Score at The Hawthorns

What a breathless and brilliant contest at The Hawthorns. James Morrison has built belief and a brand of football that means despite being two goals down after just 12 minutes, home supporters sensed a comeback could be possible.

To come back and win all three points? Well, the noise when the full-time whistle was blown suggests this is a victory supporters will savour for the rest of their week, not just their weekend.

It is hard to remain positive and aggressive when you are trailing but West Brom were brave and defiant earning their reward with back to back victories for a third time this season.

Rovers will be disappointed with their game management. The visitors had lost two of their 10 games on the road prior to this. A sore defeat especially after such a bright start.
