Marezi scored Portsmouth's winner from the penalty spot to condemn Norwich City to their sixth straight defeat and heap even more pressure on manager Philippe Clement.

Norwich have slipped to just a point above the drop zone after their eighth defeat in their first 11 league games in a season where many fans expected a promotion tilt after their strong second half to the last campaign.

The closest they came to an equaliser was when Pelle Mattsson hit the post and Clement is fighting to turn around their alarming slump. The Belgian and his players were booed by the angry Norwich fans at the end.

Portsmouth have climbed towards mid-table safety thanks to Marezi's third goal since his £3m summer move from Almeria, with John Mousinho's side having now taken 11 points from a possible 18.

Norwich paid a fitting pre-kick-off tribute to former honorary life president Michael Wynn-Jones, who died last month, the majority shareholder with his wife Delia Smith for 26 years until 2024.

Darren Huckerby led out a host of former players and managers, including Chris Hughton and Tim Krul, and they lined up either side of the halfway line at Carrow Road.

The first 45 minutes were a let down after this, Portsmouth goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid saving low down from a Ruairi McConville 25-yard strike from the only shot on target of the half.

This prompted the disgruntled home fans to chant ironically "We've had a shot!".

The mood among the Canaries fans further darkened when Norwich conceded a needless penalty for Portsmouth to take a 51st-minute lead.

Oscar Schwartau gave the ball away outside his own area and Jacob Wright brought down former Norwich youngster Abu Kamara, as he ran away from goal, and Marezi sent Norwich goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw the wrong way from the spot to give Pompey the lead.

The Canaries tried to respond and Anis Ben Slimane had a shot saved by Schmid.

Portsmouth were hanging on at the end and the closest Norwich came to scoring was when Mattsson shot against the inside of the right-hand post, with Schmid beaten, 12 minutes from time.

'We need to make the right decisions in the final third' - reaction

Norwich manager Philippe Clement told BBC Radio Norfolk:

"I don't like to be a broken record, to repeat the same things every week, but I cannot ask more about passion, engagement, in giving everything for the club that I've seen from the players.

"But this young group needs to calm down when we have the ball, to make the right decisions in the final third and then we'll be back where we need to be.

"That's important. They need to feel the reward of all the work they've been doing.

"We had some moments of bad luck, like hitting the post. That's part of football and we've had more of those moments in the last couple of weeks."

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent:

"I thought we played very well in the first half and started the second half OK. We got the goal, ironically for all our good play in the first half, we didn't quite create enough and it was from a quick turnover, where we just got in front of the defender and managed to get the penalty that changed the game for us.

"Off the back of that, we defended extremely well, so yeah, a very good performance."

On Marezi's penalty: "He had a long time to wait. There was a bit of messing about on the edge of the box and pressurised circumstances, high, high pressure.

"I know having taken penalties myself in the league, I know it's a tough place to be. Everybody expects the ball to go in the back of the net. So I'm extremely pleased that he put it in there. He's a player who's got a lot of confidence and you can see why."
