  2. 'We can't forget to be ambitious'published at 19:59 GMT

Tottenham boss Roberto de Zerbi, speaking to MOTD: "The passion we showed anyway, we didn't lose the focus, the concentration. We made an incredible reaction when we lost the ball. We could have scored more goals, but anyway, we created many chances. We have to be more nastily, especially in the last third of the match. Especially in the finishing. Happy because I knew before the game a tough game that we could play today.

On the red card changing the game: "I don't agree. For them, nothing changed. They play with 10 players and I think it is always better to play against 10 and not 11, but as a plan of the game, I think nothing changed. For that I knew before the game. We prepared this game in a different way to Chelsea, for example. The game against Chelsea you play in 80-90 metres man to man. Today we played in five metres in small, small spaces. To be good in small spaces, you have to stay focused and make not too many mistakes.

"I think we were also pleased with the performance for this reason."

On the mood improving: "Listen, we are Tottenham, so we can't forget to be ambitious. To be hungry, to win games in a row, and to make our fans happy at the same time as we can't forget two weeks ago where we have been in the table, to change the last two-to-three seasons of this club. Three games in a row is not enough, we have to keep this behaviour, this spirit. This condition to prepare every game in the same way.

"I think even before the national break we were playing well not 90 minutes, not with this behaviour, not with this union between the players. After the national break, we spoke together honestly, and we decided to change the mood quickly because in football, you can't ask for time. Especially if you have a good players like we have. I think nothing has changed, but the mood, spirit, the relationship with the players are totally different."

  3. 'You can trust in me, I will never give up'published at 19:57 GMT

    FT: Tottenham 2-0 Crystal Palace

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace Pierre Sage, speaking to Sky Sports: "The red card was normal, nothing to say about that. We had the ball at this moment, we missed the pass and JP [Mateta] tackled an opponent who he didn't see. That was a normal red card. I'm not looking for somebody who did a bad job [to blame]. When we win we are together and we have to keep the same way when we lose."

On conceding from a corner: "We didn't choose a good organisation. That's why we took this goal. The second goal is a corner too. At the end I have to congratulate Dean Henderson because he made a lot of saves and 2-0 could be more."

On how his players reacted to the red card: "We showed some values but it is difficult to come back in the game without attacking. When we recovered the ball, we lost it too quickly that's why it was really difficult.

"I am not looking for excuses. I always take my responsibility in this situation. If we lost in this way, it's because we didn't attack enough to be present and to exist in this game."

On his message looking forward: "You can trust in me, I will never give up. We need to work hard now. Our situation is bad and we have to take things in our hand. I will be the first on the pitch on Monday to push the players to win against Hoffenheim and Liverpool because we need points."

A slow start to the season for Unai Emery's Aston Villa but they seem to be clicking in the league recent weeks.

They are now looking to win three consecutive Premier League matches for the first time since a run of eight in November and December last season.

Having said that, they did suffer a 3-0 drubbing in midweek in the EFL Cup to Bournemouth.

  6. 'It's not enough, but we are improving a lot'published at 19:49 GMT

    FT: Tottenham 2-0 Crystal Palace

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi, speaking to Sky Sports: "Very pleased for the performance, very tough game. You don't know 11 [against 11] would be different game but Crystal Palace are very tough because they defend with a low block, no space and we showed we are a mature team. Maybe we could score more goals with more nastiness, but I am very happy because we created many chances. We need more goals for sure. It's not enough, but we are improving a lot.

"I was very nervous before the game, during the game, after the red card, it's always better playing with one player more. But today, against this team, they played with this behaviour, all behind the line of the ball, aggressive. Very tough game."

On Archie Gray's role in the team: "Archie Gray can play everywhere on the pitch. He's very smart. With the first yellow card I had to make the substitution. He can play midfielder. If we want to compete in the best way we can, we need more than 11 players. I'm sorry for example for Marcos Senesi because he is a top player. Now he is not playing, but if we want to build a top team competing for a high level, we need more than 11 players."

On his wingers: "I would like them to believe more and more in because they are all very good players. I want to enjoy during the week and if you have a talent like Tel, Kudus or Savinho, they need to enjoy with the ball. Me too. If they play well, we have more chance to win the games."

On if Spurs are now looking up the table: "We don't forget the ambitions. We have to look behind what was the situation two weeks ago. In the last two years, two times 17th in the table, many games without a win in front of our fans. We have to stay focused. They are improving, increasing the level of performances. To win games we need players playing at this level.

"I am lucky because I have great guys, a great dressing room, many players with the right experience, many players hungry to win and to give for this club another part of the history. The last part has been not good enough."

Aston Villa are yet to lose a Premier League game in the month of October under Unai Emery, winning eight times and drawing four. Last Saturday's win over league leaders Manchester City marked the four-year anniversary of Emery's appointment, and on Friday this week he surpassed Martin O'Neill as the club's longest-serving manager since the gilded reign of Ron Saunders from 1974 to 1982.

After admitting he used the difficult first month of the campaign before the international break as an extended pre-season to mould his new-look side, Emery's Villa 2.0 are taking shape. The club's two most expensive signings are more than justifying their hefty price tags, with Johan Manzambi a creative tour de force and Nicolas Jackson scoring six goals in as many games.

Villa reeled off six wins and a draw in seven games across all competitions before Wednesday's limp surrender by mostly fringe players at Bournemouth in a customary early Carabao Cup exit under the Spaniard. "Premier League is the priority," said an unapologetic Emery afterwards.

That being the case, Villa have been meeting their manager's demands of late, earning a league-high 10 points from the past four rounds of matches.

Spurs have really got into the top half of the table with this performance. I don't know what has changed, but they seem to have their confidence back.

Also worth noting that Crystal Palace losing to Tottenham means Manchester United stay out of the relegation zone. Just. They are level on points with 18th-placed Palace but with a better goal difference.

United flirted with the drop zone for a spell this afternoon but have Spurs to thank for not ending the evening in it.

  10. 'Main message is to stay together as a team'published at 19:40 GMT

    FT: Tottenham 2-0 Crystal Palace

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell, speaking to Sky Sports: "Definitely was frustrating. It was one of the first tackles of the game.

"And we felt like we were doing well and it is unfortunate. We go again.

"The main message was don't concede again, stay tight as a defence and try to hit them on the counter. That is the best plan when you're down a man.

"Unfortunately, it didn't happen today. We know what we can do as a team, as a back five, the whole unit. There were some positives in the games, but I can't say much when you lose. We just have to go again.

"Hopefully, the next game we win. The main message is to stay together as a team. We know what we are capable of. It is staying confident and bouncing back."

  12. 'We want to be back at the top again'published at 19:34 GMT

    FT: Tottenham 2-0 Crystal Palace

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham goalscorer Jan Paul van Hecke, speaking to Sky Sports: "Really good, really happy. This is the result we wanted. Of course it helps when they get a red card but we stayed calm, created a lot of chances, it took a while before we scored the second one but it was a good game, we were solid and I'm happy with three points.

We knew before the game they have a really low block and its hard to play through them, we had to be patient and find a gap, we could have scored more but I'm happy."

On his goal: "When I had it first I thought it was a great save, then it came back to my head and I got it in, I am really happy. I was lucky the ball came back."

On working under Roberto De Zerbi again: "He's a top, top manager. I have a really good relationship with him. He gets the best out of me and there is a lot more to come from us so its really exiting."

"When you win games the confidence is growing. When you keep clean sheets that is really positive. At the beginning of the season we played well but didn't win games, that's football. We needed to stay calm and we did. Now we need to stay calm and keep going and win a lot of games because we want to be back at the top again."

  13. 'Villa on a great run'published at 19:33 GMT

    Sutton's predictions graphic

I am not surprised that Fulham's Premier League form has picked up because after watching them earlier in the season I thought they should have more points than they had.

The Cottagers are a well-structured team but I still don't see them stopping an in-form Aston Villa, or their striker Nicolas Jackson, at this moment in time.

Villa are on a great run in the league and I am expecting more goal action from Jackson here.

    Sutton's prediction: 3-1

Right, we move onto our final game of the longest day ever. We'll bring you some reaction plus build up as we have it.

If you've been with us since the 12.30 kick-off, which feels a long time ago now, then congratulations and thanks for keeping us company.

Perhaps some of you are using this gap to quickly take the kids trick or treating. Pick yourselves up some snacks for this late kick-off, maybe.

Will it be a trick or a treat of a night for Aston Villa or Fulham?

I would like to think Crystal Palace fans and the hierarchy give Sage a bit of slack. Incredible play by Luca Williams-Barnett, dribbling and taking players on. Crosses the ball across the six-yard box and Mohammed Kudus has to score. He is two yards out.
