RHS Tatton Flower Show - Scent

Here's a list of plants and flowers for you to use in your design for a scent based garden. Please only select from these plants as other may not be available.

Flowers

Pervoskia ‘Blue Spire’ - Common Name: Russian Sage

A fragrant silver leaved shrub growing to approximately 1m in height and eventually to 1m. It has iridescent, aromatic foliage with violet blue flower spikes, blooming in late summer/early autumn.

Cosmos astrosanguineus - Common Name: Chocolate Cosmos.

This perennial has velvety maroon flowers in summer that have a distinct chocolate scent.
It will grow to a height of 40cm and spread to 45cm.

Lavandula angustifolia ‘Munstead’ - Common Name: Lavender

Everything about this compact evergreen is scented, from its silver green foliage to its lavender blue flowers.
It will grow to approximately 60cm high and wide and will flower from mid to late summer.

Thymus x citriodorus ‘Doone Valley’ - Common Name: Thyme

This low growing, mat-forming herb is highly aromatic when its leaves are crushed.
It grows approximately 12cm high and will spread to around 35cm.
In summer it is covered in lavender/pink flowers that are highly attractive to bees.

Rosa

If you wish to use a rose within your design please specify the colour and type e.g. Hybrid Tea, cluster flowering and an idea of ultimate size? We will endeavour to source this rose for you or find a suitable substitute.

Rosmarious officinalis ‘Prostratus’ - Common Name: Rosemary

This is a low growing variety of aromatic herb. It will only grow to a height of 15cm with indefinite spread.
It has purple/blue flowers in mid-spring to early summer and silver/green evergreen leaves.

Houttuynia cordata ‘Chameleon’ - Common Name: Chameleon Plant

Brilliant ground colour cover with indefinite spread, reaching a height of 30cm.
The yellow/green/red and pink foliage is highly lemon scented when crushed.
In June/July it does have small insignificant yellow/green flowers.

Helichrysum italicum - Common Name: Curry Plant

Low growing compact aromatic herb with white/silver leaves.
It will grow to approximately 100cm and spread to 80cm.

Caryopteris x clandonensis

A mound-forming aromatic shrub with grey/green leaves.
In summer it produces superb true blue flowers. It will eventually grow to approximately 1m in height and 1.5m wide, but will be available to us measuring 45cm in height and width.

Artemisia schmidtiana ‘Nana’ - Common Name: Mugwort

This low growing evergreen perennial will eventually form a hairy silver carpet approximately 30cm wide and 8cm high.
It feels very soft and tickly to touch, having small yellow flowers in summer.

Pelargonium crispum - Common Name: Lemon Scented Pelargonium

This upright annual has lemon scented leaves with a cream edge. It produces flowers in shades of pink & lilac throughout the summer and will grow to approximately 35 cm high and 15cm wide.

Santolina Chamaecyparissus - Common Name: Cotton Lavender

This compact dense silver leaved evergreen has highly scented foliage when crushed.
It will eventually grow to 50cm high and 1m wide, producing bright yellow flowers in mid to late summer. The specimens available to us stand approximately 30cm high and 20cm wide.

Arbutus Unedo - Common Name: Strawberry Tree

This slow growing evergreen has attractive honey scented white flowers in autumn, followed by strawberry like fruits. It will grow into a tree if not kept in check with pruning. The specimens available to us will stand approximately 80cm high and 20cm wide.

Aloysia triphylla - Common Name: Lemon Verbena

This highly lemon scented herb used in potpourri, drank as tea and eaten in salads.
It has tiny white/lilac edible flowers in summer and mid-green leaves. The specimens available to us will be 5cm high

Salvia rutilans - Common Name: Pineapple Sage

This tender perennial has soft hairy leaves that are strongly scented of pineapple when the hairy stems are crushed.
It will grow to 60cm wide and 90cm high, but the specimens available to us will be

Mentha x Gentilis - Common Name: Ginger Mint

This spreading perennial has strongly aromatic leaves that taste of ginger and clusters of lilac flowers in summer.
It can grow up to 30cm high and can spread over 1m wide.

Lavandula dentata - Common Name: Lavender

This standard trained shrub will stand approximately 90cm high. It has grey/green aromatic leaves that are more scalloped around the edges than the usual lavenders.
It has fragrant purple/blue flowers tipped with purple bracts in mid to late summer.

Clematis flammula - Common Name: Travellers Joy

This late flowering clematis has white, star shaped heavily scented flowers in mid-summer and autumn with blue/green leaves. It will spread to 1m and allowed to climb will reach 6m. Can also be used as a trailer. The specimens available to us will be approximately 1m high.

Origarium vulgare ‘Aureum’ - Common Name: Golden Wild Marjoram

This low growing perennial has extremely aromatic golden leaves with small pink flowers in summer.
It will reach 8cm in height but has an indefinite spread.

Eucalyptus gunnii - Common Name: Gum

If left un-pruned, Eucalyptus can grow into a tall tree, however it is best grown as a shrub that is cut back to ground level every year to encourage the attractive juvenile aromatic silver grey leaves. The specimens available to us will stand approximately 1m high and 60cm wide.
