Come To Your Senses - Design a garden for Tatton

For this year’s RHS Flower Show at Tatton we’re offering four people/groups the chance to design a garden.

The BBC Manchester Garden will be divided into five raised beds, or pods, around the theme of our five senses – taste, touch, sight, sound and smell.

Horticulturists from Woodford Park Garden Centre (Cheshire) will be looking after one of the pods, sound, and the overall display, so that leaves the other four sense pods to be designed – and that’s where you come in.

We're looking for the best design for each of the four remaining senses with the winning designs forming part of the overall BBC plot. And if that’s not enough of an incentive for you to get creative, each of the winning designers will be able to nominate where their pod will go after the show – a school, a community centre or something similar anywhere in Greater Manchester or Cheshire.

You'll be able to see the winning gardens at the RHS Tatton Flower Show from 18th to 22nd July.

How to enter

Pick a sense – Taste, Touch, Sight or Smell - and get designing! Your only limit is your imagination, the plants available and the size of the pod which is 1500mm x 1250mm.

Things you need to know

Each sense will be in a pod - a wooden container measuring one and half square meters. A list of available plants will be available later this week – but you can start thinking about an overall look in terms of height and layout.
The closing date for the competition is Sunday 17th June with winners announced shortly after.
Each winner will consult with our experts from Woodford Park Garden Centre (Cheshire) who will advise on any final touches and if any plants need substituting due to availability.

Send your designs to –

Come To Your Senses, BBC Radio Manchester, PO Box 951, Oxford Road Manchester, M60 1SD
OR e-mail your entry to radiomanchester@bbc.co.uk
OR you can drop your entry off at Woodford Park Garden Centre (Cheshire) Chester Road, Woodford.

Terms and conditions

• The competition is open to UK residents only and you must be available to come to the Tatton Flower Show for radio/TV interviews if required (tickets will be provided for winners). Staff, friends and family of the BBC & Woodford Park are not able to enter.
• Closing date June 17th
• The judges’ decision is final and no cash alternative will be offered
• The final planted garden will be as sympathetic to your initial design as possible. Changes may have to be implemented due to the individual characteristics of the plants/shrubs.
• Please do not include accessories (wind chimes etc) in your design
• Finished pods can only be relocated within Greater Manchester or Cheshire. Please note that the containers will be delivered complete so please consider access for unloading and that we may not be able to place the pod in its final position.
