RHS Tatton Flower Show - Taste

Here's a list of plants and flowers for you to use in your design for a taste based garden. Please only select from these plants as other may not be available.

Flowers

Laurus nobilis - Common Name: Bay

This evergreen has dark green leaves and clusters of yellow flowers in April/May followed by black berries in June/August.
It responds well to pruning, which is important if grown in a container as it can grow to 2m in height and width. Leaves are often used to add flavour in cooking.
We can offer either a cone shaped or standard specimen.

Origanum vulgare - Common Name: Wild Marjoram

This spreading perennial has semi-upright stems with dark green foliage, it will spread to form a clump around 90cm wide and grow to a height of 30cm.
In mid summer it has clusters of tubular flowers in pink or white. The plants available to us will be approximately 10cm wide.

Fragaria vesca ‘Alpine Strawberries - Common Name: Wild Strawberries’

This small low growing strawberry is grown for its aromatic and very sweet fruits in mid to late summer.
Although the fruits are small they develop in large numbers over a long period.

Mentha spicata - Common Name: Spearmint

This common garden herb is well known for its strong minty flavour and scent. It grows to approximately 60cm in height with an indefinite spread.
It produces lilac minty scented flowers and its leaves are commonly used in tea to aid digestion.

Tropaealum majus - Common Name: Nasturtium

This vigorous annual climber can also be used as a trailer where it looks attractive flopped over the side of containers. It has red/orange/yellow edible flowers in summer/autumn and has rounded wavy edged light green leaves.
It can grow up to 5m high if allowed to climb.

Minarett Apple ‘Greensleeves’

This minaret apple tree is ideal for containers as it is easy to manage and fruit remains within easy reach.
It is an early cropper with medium sized apples ready for picking in September.

Lycopersicon esculentum - Common Name: Tomato (Tumbling varieties)

These tomatoes are ideal for growing in containers or hanging baskets as they are low growing. Their fruit is small, red and very sweet. They will only grow to a height of approximately 10cm high but will spread to around 30-40cm.

Flowers

Rosmarinus officinalis ‘ Miss Jessop’s Upright’ - Common Name: Rosemary

This evergreen, highly aromatic shrub has dense grey/green foliage with beautiful blue lilac flowers in April and May. It can grow up to 1.5m in height and width. The leaves have culinary and medicinal uses. The plant available to us will stand approximately 30-45cm high.

Calendula officinalis - Common Name: Pot Marigold

This hardy annual can grow to 60cm high and wide. They have oval, mid-green leaves and large gold daisy like flowers in summer. Its leaves can be used in salads and it’s flowers offer a warm mild flavour when used in cooking.

Salvia officinalis ‘Purpurescens’ - Common Name: Purple Sage

This shrub like evergreen perennials has hairy purple young leaves, maturing to grey/green and lilac/blue flowers in summer.
It will grow to approximately 80cm high and eventually spread to 1m. Its leaves have culinary uses.

Thymus vulgaris ‘Silver Posie’ - Common Name: Thyme

This low growing herb will grow no higher than 15cm and spread to 40cm. It has tiny mid green leaves edged in cream.
In the late spring, early summer it is covered in pale pink/lilac flowers.
Thyme is traditionally used in bouquets garni when used in tea. Can be helpful for those hangovers!

Ficus carica - Common Name: Fig

This hardy deciduous tree or shrub can grow to 3m in height and 4m in width when unrestricted. However if you choose to use a fig in your design we will restrict the root run to maintain size and encourage fruit development.
The variety of fig will depend on availability at the time of planting. The figs available to us will stand approximately 1m high.

Bela vulgaris cicla - Common Name: Swiss Chard

As well as a vegetable this plant can also be grown for the ornamental properties of its leaves. It has clusters of mid-green glossy leaves with a striking red mid-rib and stem.
It will grow to 23cm in height and form a clump approximately 45cm wide.

Vaccinium corymbosum - Common Name: Blueberry

One of the best ‘superfoods’, this deciduous shrub will grow to approximately 1.5m high and wide. It has mid-green leaves turning yellow or red in autumn.
In late spring and early summer it has white bell-like flowers that are followed by edible, sweet blue/black berries.
The specimens available to us stand approximately 60cm high and 30cm wide.

Anethum gravolens - Common Name: Dill

This aniseed scented annual has long smooth stems with feathery blue/green foliage, giving it a light airy feel. In summer it has tiny yellow flowers.
It will grow to 60cm tall and 30cm wide. Dill seeds can be used to treat stomach ache and flatulence in adults!

Vaccinium macrocarpon - Common Name: Cranberry

Low growing evergreen shrub with small dark green leaves turning bronze in winter. During the summer it has bell shaped pink flowers, followed by edible red berries.
It will grow only 15cm high but will have indefinite spread.

Fragaria x ananassa - Common Name: Strawberry

Strawberries are probably the most popular soft fruit for growing in a container because of their low growing and trailing habit.
If you use strawberries in your design please specify a variety and we will endeavour to source it or choose a suitable substitute.

Chamaemelum nobile - Common Name: Chamomile

This is a hardy evergreen perennial that grows to approximately 10cm in height and can spread to 45cm wide. It produces white daisy-like flowers throughout the summer months and its aromatic foliage can be used to relieve insomnia and treat digestive disorders.

Allium schaenoprasum - Common Name: Chives

This perennial is grown for its rounded cylindrical leaves that have a number of culinary uses. It will grow to 30cm in height and spread to form a clump of 60cm wide.
In summer it has rounded pale purple or sometimes white flowers.

Viola tricolour - Common Name: Wild Pansy

Violas grow to approximately 10cm in height and 8cm wide, flowering throughout the summer.
If you choose to use violas in your design we will endeavour to source your selected variety or obtain a suitable substitute.
