With New Zealand already leadiing by more than 100 runs, England need to be careful with their lengths. Of the 30-odd runs New Zealand have scored so far, 14 have come from deliveries pitched on a fuller length, at 7.63 runs per over. England will need to be wary of serving up too many full deliveries at this stage.

  3. NZ 36-2published at 10.4 overs

Rachin Ravindra with another demonstrative drive.

He has bit between his teeth as he biffs Gus Atkinson back down the ground for four, beating the diving Ben Stokes at mid-off.

It's better a pitch deteriorating rather than the common theme of them getting better and better.

  5. NZ 32-2published at 10 overs

Henry Nicholls underdoes and refastens the velcro straps on his gloves between deliveries.

Josh Tongue is honing in on the stumps but Nicholls is pretty stoic.

Archer is coming to his fifth over here, I would just give him one more.

  7. NZ 31-2published at 9 overs

Another vicious delivery from Jofra Archer. It's not particularly quick - 83mph - but climbs into Henry Nicholls from back of a length.

  13. NZ 23-2published at 6 overs

Rachin Ravindra gets one in the slot from Gus Atkinson and the Kiwi elegantly drives through the covers for four.

    Conway c Root b Archer 5 (NZ 12-2)

Devon Conway flicks Jofra Archer off his pads for a couple after resuming, but he's gone next ball.

It's another short-ish ball from Archer and Conway just fiddles at it, almost turning his head away again, and it catches the shoulder of the bat.

No mistake from Joe Root at first slip as he gobbles up the catch.

Archer had clearly rattled Conway with the delivery which clocked him on the bonce a few balls previously.

  17. NZ 9-1published at 4.3 overs

Devon Conway is on his feet but there's some adjustments being made to his helmet. We've already lost Blair Tickner replaced as a concussion substitute.

No limit on the number of players who can be subbed in this manner.

It was a nasty blow to Devon Conway and this is a lengthy check. It's not easy for batting.

There has been differential movement and variable bounce in this session. The pitch has something in it and batting has become a bit more difficult than the first couple of days or so.

  20. ouch!

A brutish short ball from Jofra Archer.

It's dug into the pitch by the England quick and Devon Conway turns his head away to take evasive action and it clocks him on the side of the helmet.

    We have a concussion check.
