In this series, Joe Root has been troubled by seamers when facing deliveries projected to hit the stumps. He has been dismissed four times, averaging just 2.5 against such deliveries.

In England, the last time Root was dismissed four or more times by deliveries projected to hit the stumps in a series was against Australia in 2019. He was dismissed five times and averaged 4.6 in that series.

    Thanks for the obsveration, David.

I visited Tonpandy once by the way. I was sorely disappointed not to see a Fireman Sam statue in the town.

Why am I not surprised England lost the early wickets ? Feels like a common theme

This is why I love cricket and it is a fascinating game. We all said that they needed to get through the first hour and now they have had there wickets. That is why Test cricket can change in the first half an hour and why you need to limit them.

    It is out.

A brilliant catch from Daryl Mitchell, who takes it low between his feet but crucially above any blades of grass.

It's full from Nathan Smith and poor shot from Jamie Smith, driving on the up, given the situation.

England wobbling here as Ben Stokes comes to the crease with a warm reception from the Trent Bridge crowd.

That was a very eventful first 20 minutes. You thought Jacob Bethell and Joe Root would just sit and get through that first half an hour. We talk about how important that first half an hour is and it can absolutely change the game. Now, after those first two wickets, the field has changed a lot out there.

  15. Eng 229-4published at 50 overs

Ben Stokes did get 95 for Durham in the County Championship during the last Test, Jay, so his form has picked up a little.

Will O'Rourke continues as the faint hum of a light aircraft with a propeller hums over Trent Bridge.

The Kiwi seamer fizzes a tempter Jamie Smith's bat.

Need these two to develop a partnership of circa 100 runs. Not sure a Ben Stokes series average of 6 is going to contribute.

    Jay, Northamptonshire

  17. Eng 228-4published at 49 overs

Fascinating battle now between Nathan Smith and Harry Brook now with wicketkeeper Tom Blundell stood up to the stumps.

A chat with a colleague and we've pondered whether Brook is so concerned about Blundell's presence that he's overthinking the optics of what a possible dismissal with keeper up looks like rather than playing his natural game?

England a bit skittish and jittery this morning. What did they have on their cornflakes?

Jamie Smith works one into the leg side but there's a communication mix up with Harry Brook as they contemplate a second.

Both players set off and then face a bit of dash to get back.
