How unhygienic it is to wear your shoes at home?

Kate Bowie, BBC correpondent
"Eww! That's on our shoes? That's much grosser than I thought it would be actually."

Do you take off your shoes indoors?

The question divides parts of the world, and the internet.

It's something that couple, American Sophia and Serbian Pedja, quickly learnt when they shared their different views on social media.

Sophia Trifunovic, leave shoe on
"The reason that we made that video was because there was a huge debate between my family and his."

Pedja Trifunovic, take shoes off
I grew up in a house where we took off our shoes.

Sophia Trifunovic, leave shoe on
"It was, like, very strange to me, that I'm like 'Oh, you want to, like, smell my feet?'"

Pedja Trifunovic, take shoes off
"A lot of people are 'disgusted' by 'Oh, how can you wear shoes in the house?'"

But is it really unhygienic to leave your shoes on indoors?

BBC World Service went to a microbiology lab at the University of Brighton to find out.

Dr Sarah Pitt, microbiologist
"These are your shoes?"

Kate Bowie, BBC correpondent
"These are my shoes."

Dr Sarah Pitt, microbiologist
"Where have you been with those?"

Dr Sarah Pitt, microbiologist
"We're going to get your shoes, swab the top and the bottom. And then we're going to put that sample onto some agar plates. We're going to come back in 24 hours and then see what's grown. Back in the lab, here are your plates. So we found staphylococcus aureus and that can be very nasty, even in healthy people. If you scratch yourself, you get staph aureus in there, you can get a big boil, sort of infected pus. But also it can cause significant infections like pneumonia and also a bloodstream infection in people who are immunocompromised."

Dr Sarah Pitt, microbiologist
"Those bacteria that we found could stay alive and able to infect other people in the household for quite some time, maybe even a few days, particularly in a nice safe, warm environment like a carpet. All around the world there might be different bacteria. There'll also be funguses and also parasites. So, wherever you are in the world, you should definitely take your shoes off as soon as you get indoors.
