Saving gorillas by helping humans

These forests are one of the few places on Earth that you can find a rare but remarkable animal: the mountain gorilla.

这片森林是地球上为数不多仍能见到这种珍稀而奇特的动物的地方——它们就是山地大猩猩。

Their DNA is so similar to humans that they can easily pick up our illnesses, so we have to wear masks when we're near them.

"This is one of just over 1,000 mountain gorillas in the world, and it's a silverback. It's got a family of about seven, and it's quite comfortable around people."

Despite threats to their habitat, gorilla numbers are now rising. That's partly due to the work of one conservationist.

"They're so similar to us, and yet they're so gentle and accommodating. They're really gentle giants. At the same time, they're so vulnerable, and so you just feel like you want to protect them."

And the way she tries to protect them is to make sure the people who live nearby are also looked after.

Some of them used to hunt for meat in the forest because food was scarce, and this could injure the gorillas. So Gladys looked for ways to boost their income.

"And here's what's really making a difference here: coffee. Beans like these mean that people can now turn away from poaching and instead embrace farming."

Elifaz used to be a poacher, but now he's been helped to develop his crop, and his beans are now marketed as Gorilla Conservation Coffee.

"And so all of this is to make them self-sufficient, so that they're less dependent on the forest to meet their basic needs, and also don't pick up diseases from poaching animals or give diseases to the gorillas."

Another way she helps is to look after local people's welfare. Health workers visit houses in the area to check on sanitation and give advice about hygiene.

It's only a drill, but this is the human-gorilla resolution team in action. Their job is to safely chase away gorillas when they stray onto farmland. It's designed to reduce conflict with farmers.

The result of initiatives like these is that gorilla numbers are increasing, and they're no longer on the critically endangered list.
