The site in 2002

Of course, the most exciting thing to happen this year was the launch of the TOTP2 website. Never a dull moment when you've got the likes of Bucks Fizz and Human League on the blower, begging for an interview. We even got to flirt outrageously with the ladies from Legs & Co.

But for those of you thinking "who?" to all of that, let's have a look at what was happening in the charts during 2002.

This year's Top 5 Stories
We had some real returns to form in 2002 thanks to Oasis, Coldplay and the Sugababes(!). But then again, we had a new Michael Jackson album... But despite all that pop heavyweight activity, this was the year of the wannabe. Pop Idol AND Popstars: The Rivals spawned some of today's most significant pop people. And to think that at the time, we gave them a year tops (oops, sorry Gareth)...

Britney And JustinTheir relationship might have been in tatters, but Britney and Justin lived on in the form of whole continents worth of newspaper coverage speculating on the break up, the bitchy pop video, the dogs, oh hang on... not the dogs - that came later. Tell you what though, didn't they release some corking albums after that, eh? They should break up more often!

Sophie Ellis Bextor

Will And GarethNot content with flipping coins for who would top the charts from one week to the next, this telly-able twosome decided to double team us all, with a cover of the 'Long And Winding Road'. Which aptly describes many a Beatles fan's recovery after hearing it. And guess where it landed in the charts! Go on, guess!

Liam And His Teeth Liam's mouth is a path to all manner of trouble for its cocky owner at the best of times. But a scuffle in Germany with an alleged criminal left Liam a little lost for words, and teeth! And the guy wasn't even a music critic!

Billie

Eminem2002 saw Eminem become a bonafide film star. No, not just a bit-parter like Snoop, Ja Rule or Ludacris, but a proper, star-of-the-show lead man. Course, 8 Mile was based on his early life as a rap battler, so we're betting that no one else would've done it justice. No, not even Christopher 'Dr Who' Eccleston.

Girls AloudWhere there is good, there must be evil. And while we might have gained a pop force to equal the Spice Girls in the form of Girls Aloud, we had to endure One True Voice as well. Thankfully, not for long though. Y'see, there IS a pop God!

Will YoungWill was a webchat virgin back in 2002. Fortunately, we were on hand to break him in gently. And in return, we got one of his frankest interviews ever... Read The Interview
