Winning Roland Garros finally cleared the mental hurdles that were holding Zverev back. With neither Sinner nor Alcaraz in his way, he has a perfect and maybe only opportunity to take the title!

Right, can Ben Shelton respond? He's got almost the entirety of Arthur Ashe Stadium behind him.
The American takes a couple of points of Zverev to get to 30-30 and despite a lovely forehand winner from the German, Shelton then forces deuce with a perfect return winner.

We've seen really the intense moments, both of them had them, but they were dealt with completely differently.
On one side, when Zverev was down in the game he came up with an amazing serve, came forward and took charge.
When Ben was under pressure, twice on break points, he put it into the net.

Alexander Zverev broke serve in the first game of the match and he does so again in the ninth to win the opening set.
Ben Shelton served two double faults in the first set - both of them on break points.
40 minutes gone and the number one seed is in control.

Two missed backhands into the net leave Ben Shelton 15-30 down on serve and Alexander Zverev two point away from winning the set.
Shelton wins the next but then another backhand into the net brings up set point for the German top seed.

Again, Ben Shelton is in with a sniff of a break back but he balloons a forehand high and long at 15-30.
Alexander Zverev confidently puts away a smash on the next point and an unreturned serve restores his two-game lead in the first set.
He's one game away from winning it now.

I watched some of the warm-up today and Shelton was practising that serve down the centre T to the backhand quite a bit today, which made me wonder if that's where he is going to target some of those groundstrokes.
But as we know, that's Zverev's favourite side and he neutralises that serve.

After two straight love holds, Ben Shelton finds himself 15-30 in his latest service game and after a recovery of sorts, there's more work for him to do at deuce.
He gets it done, wrapping up the game with a second serve that Alexander Zverev nets, and the American is keeping Zverev on his toes despite the German still having that break advantage.

Big noise inside Arthur Ashe Stadium as Ben Shelton somehow gets to a backhand volley at the net for a winner - 0-30 on the Alexander Zverev serve, and Shelton puts his finger to his ear wanting the volume even louder.
Zverev recovers well, taking the next four points for a 4-2 lead in set one.

One thing I have noticed and I find interesting is Zverev is playing to the middle and backhand side of the court, so the right-hand side.
Shelton wants to run around and use the forehand but he got caught out on occasion not being fast enough to go after that ball.

Shelton starting to settle down a bit but it's going to be tough to break the Zverev serve, could be a long night.

Understandably so, I think there were a few early nerves from Shelton and I feel like Zverev has been very calm and he's been striking the ball very well.
But I feel like there are more twists and turns to come in this opening set.

I feel like there's a bit more pressure on Zverev given his age and that he'll want to win as much as he can while Sinner and Alcaraz aren't fully fit, plus the 2020 loss will still hurt. Shelton has time on his side and will have plenty more chances.

Alexander Zverev starts his second service game with a double fault, his first of the final, which brings a few shouts of encouragement for Ben Shelton from the stands.
The German nets a forehand for 30-30, but the forehand down the line works to take the next point and he goes on to hold serve.

He said himself he's a very different character to the one that played in 2020, he has a lot more experience.
