So America's wait for a first man to win a major title since Andy Roddick in 2003 goes on.

They have a handful of players knocking on the door such as Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe, but none have been able to bridge the gap as yet to the elite players on the men's Tour.

Shelton showed glimpses today against Alexander Zverev, especially in the third set, that he could one day make the step up, but the 23-year-old still has a lot of work to do.

Alexander Zverev finishes his victory speech by thanking the crowd in New York:

"I know that 99.9% of the people wanted Ben to win so I'm very sorry! Secondly, it was an incredible atmosphere to play in.

"Even though a lot of the crowd was against me, the crowd was always incredibly fair and we, as players, appreciate it. You brought the energy and the noise and we thank you for that.

"I think I've talked enough, so thank you and see you next year."

"I want to thank one person who is never watching my matches but is the most important person in my tennis life and in my life in general.

"When your four-year-old son gets diagnosed with diabetes and doctors tell you that life and sports will be very limited for that child, it takes a very strong mother to walk out of those offices and say 'my son will be whatever wants to be - if he wants to be a tennis player, he will be a tennis player, if he wants to do something else, he will do something else - but this illness will not define us'.

"I'm happy that we worked through it and we're doing things that we're doing right now.

"My mother is the most important and strongest person I know because it takes an unbelievably strong woman to do what she did, so thanks to her as well."

US Open champion Alexander Zverev, speaking on court after beating Ben Shelton in the final:

"Ben - you are an incredible player and person. This is your first Grand Slam final but you will be back many more times and if I would have to bet all my money on it, I would bet that you will lift this trophy one day."

Zverev pays tribute to Shelton's team and family, before thanking his own coaching team:

"We went 30 years without winning a Grand Slam title and now we've won two in three months. God has seen how hard we've worked and how much we've suffered. 2026 is the outcome of all the years that happened before. You guys are absolutely amazing and I couldn't be here without you guys."

Lastly from Ben Shelton: "I want to thank all of the sponsors for making this tournament possible. All of the volunteers, the drivers, and my driver Xavier is up there somewhere - I appreciate you X.

"To the umpires, the ball kids, everyone at the practice desk and the security guards who make me smile everyday. This is my happy place, the place I love to spend time and I wish this tournament never ended so thank you all.

"I want to thank my sponsors who supported me along the way and believed in me. We still have a long way to go and I'm very appreciative of everyone who's had my back from the beginning.

"And lastly, to the city of New York - to the fans who showed up today, the fans at home and the people who have been here all week, the people who stayed until four in the morning, you guys drove me and brought me to the place I'm here today and the position I want to be in - the finals in these tournaments.

"I'm just getting started and I'll be back here again."

Ben Shelton, speaking on court after his defeat: "First and most importantly I want to thank God. My successes are a gift, my failures are a gift and being here in front of you guys is a gift.

"Sasha, congrats on these two weeks. Your second Grand Slam title, two in one year - you're one of the very best players in the world, maybe the best in the world this year. What you're doing is incredible, the way you're serving and the way you're moving and playing.

"You work harder than anyone I know, you put more hours in on the court than anyone I know. You and your team do things the right way and sincerely, happy for you guys to hold this title. It's been a long time coming here."

At the start of the year, you'd have got good odds on Alexander Zverev winning two of the four men's Grand Slam titles, given the iron grip that Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner had over men's tennis.

They had won all eight majors across 2024 and 2025, while Alcaraz also triumphed in Australia at the start of this year.

But the Spaniard's long-term injury and Sinner's fitness struggles at various stages of the year have provided an opening - and Zverev has grasped the opportunity with both hands.

It's hard to argue with Shelton.

Alexander Zverev is in tears in his seat as he waits for the trophy presentation and post-match interviews.

He waited so long for his first Grand Slam title and now he has two in the same year.

Ben Shelton looks absolutely crushed.

It must be hard to lose in any Grand Slam final, never mind in front of your home fans.

At 23 years old, I'm sure there will be more chances in the future for the American.

You have to admire Zverev enormously in this match. The way he handled it, handled the 24,000 baying for his blood and he did not give them an inch to get a hold of. He didn't even celebrate for most of the great points he played and his tactics were spot on.

That's the first time I've ever seen that in a tennis match, never mind a Grand Slam final.

Once Alexander Zverev realises he's won, he opens his arms wide to soak in the applause with a huge smile across his face, before embracing Ben Shelton and celebrating with his team.

It's a first US Open title for the German top seed and second Grand Slam after winning the French Open earlier this year

That's one point down as Alexander Zverev wins a short exchange, but a double fault on the next point lets Ben Shelton in the game.

Zverev responds with an ace, before bringing up two championship points with another big first serve.

Zverev has been spectacular.

I'm so admiring of his strength of character and the zen-like state he's been in since the very beginning of the match - not baiting the crowd or his opponent and hardly any fist-pumps.
