Ryan Fox had a fine all-around game, apart from around the greens, but his approach play was so good that it can distort those numbers.

No surprises to see Scottie Scheffler's big struggles coming on the greens, but elsewhere his game was great.

Tommy Fleetwood could have driven it better, while Cameron Young also missed the odd putt. Small margins, though.

You have to feel a bit for runner-up Cameron Young.

With his fantastic final round long since complete and the leaders faltering, he might have felt he would be in a play-off at the very least.

    Ryan Fox had other ideas.

Ryan Fox's world ranking will leap a few places after his victory at Royal Birkdale.

He began as the world number 56 and he is the lowest-ranked Open winner since Darren Clarke, who was 111th in the world when he won in 2011.

Fox, 39, had never finished in the top 10 at a major in 28 previous attempts.

You know what they say... 29th time's a charm.

Not many would have picked Ryan Fox to win The Open at the start of the week, and certainly not after a first-round 72 which left him seven shots off the lead.

Saturday is when it all changed - he shot 62, the joint-lowest round in men's major history, to propel himself up the leaderboard and into the final group today.

He started round three in a tie for 52nd, meaning this is the largest 36-hole comeback by position to win a men's major in history.

Open champion Ryan Fox: "I've got a lot of people to thank, firstly my family. My wife and kids are in Florida at the moment, I spoke to my kids last night and they said 'bring back a trophy'. I think this is a pretty cool one to bring back for them.

"My family in New Zealand and all my supporters back there - I know it's been a long night for them but I'm glad it was worthwhile.

"My team - you put in so much hard work and I wouldn't be here without you."

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live at Royal Birkdale

It's been a sensational Open on and off the golf course. So many talking points. A great winner but not the sort of winner we were anticipating.

An Open that proves golf can continue to confound, even when the big beasts are so dominant. Even though we talk so much about Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, the rump of talent in the game is very, very deep.

If it's your week, you can do it and Ryan Fox proved that. Sensational stuff.

Clark, Rai and Fox showing that winning majors is not about world rankings or top 10s. It's about delivering under the highest pressure. Many players like Burns and Fleetwood crowned before they have ever done it. Major golf doesn't work like that.

What a thrilling finale to an enthralling Open Championship! Congratulations to Ryan Fox for a wonderful final round! You have to feel for Cam Young, shooting a stunning 64, and coming up short! Brilliant by both men!

One of the greatest final hole plays to win a major. Just brilliant play by Fox!!!!
