Rangers were knocked out of Champions League qualifying following a dramatic final few minutes as Sherida Spitse's penalty kick secured Ajax a place in the play-off round.

It looked like Eilidh Austin's equaliser two minutes from the end of normal time would take the group-stage final into extra time at Petershill Park in Glasgow.

But Austin was then adjudged to have fouled Joelle Smits on the edge of the six-yard box and Netherlands midfielder Spitse slotted home the winner in stoppage time.

Ajax had dominated possession, but neither side had managed an effort on target until Mirte van Koppen's header from a corner was cleared off the line by Katie Wilkinson after 53 minutes.

The visitors did make the breakthrough shortly after the hour mark when goalkeeper Jemma Fife could only parry substitute striker Katja Snoeijs' header towards her own goalline and defender Nadine Noordam was on hand to make sure.

Only then were group hosts Rangers stung into life and Laura Berry fired straight at goalkeeper Femke Liefting before the striker had another drive deflected just wide.

A Bailley Collins cross struck the face of the crossbar and Wilkinson had a shot deflected wide before Austin rose to head home a Nicola Docherty corner.

Docherty had scored a late equaliser and Austin the winner as Rangers beat Slavia Prague 2-1 in Wednesday's group-stage semi-final.

However, there was to be no reprieve this time as Leanne Crichton's side must make do with dropping into the Europa Cup first qualifying round, just like Scottish champions Heart of Midlothian had done earlier in the day.
