Newcastle United secured a much-needed win at Selhurst Park to pile pressure on Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage.

After a drab first half low in quality, Newcastle raced into a 2-0 lead after scoring twice in 11 minutes to secure a third top-flight win under Matthias Jaissle.

William Osula's first-time finish from Jacob Murphy's 47th-minute cross set the Magpies on their way before Harvey Barnes finished well to double the lead and spark a chorus of boos from frustrated home fans.

Lukas Hornicek saved well to keep out Adam Wharton and substitute Dario Osorio.

But Palace, who had been the better team in the first half, crumbled after Osula marked his first start since the opening weekend of the season with his first goal since May.

The Denmark forward took his goal really well as Newcastle won at Selhurst Park for the first time in six years when Steve Bruce was in charge.

Palace had made a lively start but with Jean-Philippe Mateta and Daichi Kamada both having attempts, but the problems are mounting for Sage.

The Frenchman is only four months into a three-year contract but has now presided over five defeats in eight Premier League games.

Palace analysis: What now for Sage?

Palace actually started this game well but it was the same familiar outcome after failing to make their dominance count.

They are 17th in the table on seven points from eight games, while they have now conceded 12 goals in their past four league and European matches.

The new manager always had big shoes to fill following the departure of Oliver Glasner, who delivered an FA Cup, Conference League title and Community Shield.

There were boos at the full-time whistle and it remains to be seen how much time Palace will give the former Lens boss, with this result coming a week after the humiliating 5-0 defeat at fierce rivals Brighton.

Palace have two away London derbies next - at Fulham in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, and at improving Tottenham on Saturday.

Newcastle analysis: Confidence returns after timely win

This was a timely win for Jaissle, who was starting to feel the heat himself after three defeats in the previous four Premier League games.

The German made five changes to the side that lost 1-0 at home to Aston Villa last weekend and, after an uneventful first half, his team sprang into action after the interval.

Dan Burn, who has been injured, marked his first Premier League start of the season with a solid performance, while the confidence returned to the team after Osula's goal.

"Today we went for more experience and leadership skills," Jaissle said afterwards.

"It was a tough game especially in the first half. But the second half was much better and we threatened the opposition more.

"If we are all together - this journey can be successful."

Newcastle started the weekend in 11th spot but this win lifted them to seventh before the late match between Sunderland and Leeds.

They have back-to-back games against Everton next - away on Thursday in the Carabao Cup before hosting David Moyes' side in the Premier League on 2 November.

The question is, will they use this result as a springboard to kick on?
