A lot being made about Panama not losing badly so far, but England beat Croatia comfortably and dominated Ghana who set out to frustrate. England are far better than Croatia and Ghana so we should be confident that we'll beat Panama more comfortably than they did.

Ghana will win this. I thought they were excellent against England and unlucky not to get more than a point. They should have been awarded a penalty in the second half and, separately, Jordan Pickford was lucky to avoid a red card too.

They looked really well organised under Carlos Queiroz and I can see them getting the better of this ageing Croatia team, which looks old and tired - a little bit like Alistair and myself at the moment.

    Sutton's prediction: 0-1

    AI's prediction: 2-1

  3. Group L - permutationspublished at 14:37 BST

England are sure of going through at least in third.

The Three Lions top the group ahead of Ghana on goal difference and face Panama in their final game on Saturday (20:00 BST).

Thomas Tuchel's men must equal or better Ghana's result against Croatia to remain at the summit and play a third-placed team.

If both games are draws, England win the group.

If both win, top spot would be decided on goal difference - England are currently on +2 and Ghana +1, but the Three Lions have scored three more goals.

Should goal difference finish identical, it will go to disciplinary record (England -1, Ghana -2) and then England would secure it on Fifa world ranking.

Ghana have already qualified and will secure a top-two finish if they win or draw against Croatia.

The Africans will top the group if they better England's result, or win by a big enough margin to overtake them on goal difference.

Ghana will finish third if they lose, but have enough points.

Croatia must beat Ghana if they are to secure automatic qualification. A Croatia win and England dropping points would see them top the group.

A draw would secure safe passage in third. But they won't qualify with a defeat.

Panama, who are yet to open their account, are already eliminated.

Group L - England top on 4 pts, above Ghana on goal difference, followed by Croatia on 3 pts and Panama on 0 pts

Back to Group L now, with both games taking place at 22:00 BST.

England and Ghana are both guaranteed a place in the knockout stages, but the exact make up of the table is yet to be determined and could yet change drastically this evening.

  5. Europe lead the way, followed by magnificent seven from Africa - last 32published at 14:32 BST

Four more spaces of the 32 available are up for grabs in the knockout phase of the 2026 World Cup, with three groups still to be completed.

Either Austria or Algeria will take the final automatic place available in Group J, while there are three more spaces left for countries hoping to secure a slot as one of the best third-placed teams.

Of the qualifiers so far, 11 are from Europe, seven are from Africa, five are from South America, three from North and Central America, and one from Asia, while Australia complete the 28.

Here is a full list of those through so far:

    • Group A: Mexico, South Africa
    • Group B: Switzerland, Canada
    • Group C: Brazil, Morocco
    • Group D: United States, Australia
    • Group E: Germany, Ivory Coast
    • Group F: Netherlands, Japan
    • Group G: Belgium, Egypt
    • Group H: Spain, Cape Verde
    • Group I: France, Norway
    • Group J: Argentina
    • Group K: Colombia, Portugal
    • Group L: England, Ghana
    • Third place: Sweden, Ecuador, Bosnia-Herzegovinia, Paraguay, Senegal

Algeria need to win this to move above Austria and into second place.

I fancy Austria, though. I think they will out-work them under manager Ralf Rangnick.

Jordan v Argentina (Sun, 03:00 BST)

Kylian Mbappe wasn't rested for France against Norway on Friday, but fellow Golden Boot hopeful Erling Haaland was.

You get the feeling that Lionel Messi will not want to be left out against Jordan, but that tactic seems to be a factor for managers at the 2026 World Cup.

With Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez also at his disposal, Lionel Scaloni has options to replace his talisman.

  8. 'Messi or no Messi, Jordan won't be able to live with Argentina'published at 14:25 BST

Jordan v Argentina (Sun, 03:00 BST)

    Chris Sutton
    Former England forward

    Jordan v Argentina flag graphic

Argentina will make changes after wrapping up the group, and I think one of them will be to leave out Lionel Messi.

Resting him now will help their chances of winning this tournament but not his hopes of winning the Golden Boot or adding to his tally as the World Cup's all-time leading scorer.

His fans won't be happy but you've got to wrap him in cotton wool. And, Messi or no Messi, Jordan just won't be able to live with them in terms of goals.

    Sutton's prediction: 0-3

    AI's prediction: 0-3

  9. Group J - permutationspublished at 14:22 BST

Argentina have topped the group and will face Cape Verde.

Austria and Algeria are tied on three points and they meet on Sunday (00.00 BST).

Austria have the goal difference advantage but likely need draw to progress regardless, as three points and a minus goal difference is unlikely to be enough to go through.

Algeria, however, must win if they to go through automatically.

A will also be enough to send Algeria through in third on four points, and they will know if that is the case as this is the final group to complete.

    The runners-up play Spain next.

    Jordan cannot progress.

Group J - Argentina top on 6pts, followed by Austria and Algeria, both on 3 pts, and Jordan on 0 pts

I am covering this game with Alistair Bruce-Ball and expecting DR Congo to take the points.

Uzbekistan were quite weak when we saw them against Portugal and the DR Congo frontline of Yoane Wissa and Cedric Bakambu have impressed us.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-0

    AI's prediction: 2-1

  12. 'Ronaldo goals won't be enough to see Portugal top group'published at 14:13 BST

Colombia v Portugal (Sun, 00:30 BST)

    Chris Sutton
    Former England forward

    Colombia v Portugal flag graphic

This is big, because Portugal need the victory to top the group.

I saw their big win over Uzbekistan last time out, but this will be far tougher. I am going to go for a bit of an upset here, and for Colombia to get a draw.

Cristiano Ronaldo will get both of Portugal's goals but it won't be enough to see them top the group.

Not to worry though, because he will carry on until the 2040 World Cup!

    Sutton's prediction: 2-2

    AI's prediction: 1-2

  13. Group K - permutationspublished at 14:10 BST

Colombia have secured a top two spot and will win the group if they avoid defeat against Portugal on Sunday (00:30 BST).

The group winners will play a third-placed team.

Portugal must win to finish first, while a draw will lock second place.

Even if Portugal lose and DR Congo win, Roberto Martinez's team are six goals better off in goal difference so would likely take second.

DR Congo's only chance of second is tobeat Uzbekistan and overhaul that goal difference. A win, however, will put them onto four points which will be enough in third.

Uzbekistan must win but can only finish third, and with goal difference of -7 the chances of taking a place in the next round on three points are slim.

Group K - Colombia top on 6pts, Portugal on 4 pts, DR Congo on 1 pt and Uzbekistan on 0 pts

I wouldn't twist too much if I was Tuchel. Perhaps it's time for Mainoo and, dare I say it, Henderson to step into central midfield though. Panama would suit Rogers too, and O'Reilly needs to back on the left for width.

  19. Panama aiming to avoid joining unwanted historypublished at 13:48 BST

Panama v England (Sat, 22:00 BST)

    Mohamed Moallim
    BBC Sport

Panama may already be eliminated from the World Cup, but they still have something to play for.

Should they fail to score against England, they will become the seventh nation in World Cup history (and the first in 20 years) to complete an entire tournament without finding the net.

Bolivia were the first in 1930, losing 4-0 to both Yugoslavia and Brazil.

The Dutch East Indies followed in 1938, exiting after a 6-0 defeat to Hungary in the tournament’s straight knockout format.

Zaire (now DR Congo) endured a miserable 1974 campaign, losing 2-0 to Scotland, 9-0 to Yugoslavia and 3-0 to Brazil.

Canada then failed to find the net in 1986, suffering defeats to France (1-0), Hungary (2-0) and the Soviet Union (2-0).

China joined the unwanted list in 2002 after losses to Costa Rica (2-0), Brazil (4-0) and Türkiye (3-0), before Trinidad and Tobago became the most recent nation to do so in 2006, drawing 0-0 with Sweden before losing 2-0 to both England and Paraguay.
