England manager Thomas Tuchel on Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo: "After their success in the Nations League and the involvement of the Portuguese players in Paris St-Germain's Champions League win, they are one of the favourites. They have a strong football team. A strong coach and strong players."

    England

England defender Marc Guehi on whether physical intensity demanded by Thomas Tuchel is achievable: "I think so. If you look around the squad, you can see the physical capability we have, as well as the technical side and understanding of the game.

"But it’s going to take both sides - the physical aspect as well as game management. It’s about understanding the circumstances and conditions in different games and being able to tweak things.”

England manager Thomas Tuchel on the video of his speech to the players and whether it was from head or heart: “It seems like my very first talk to the team. It was from the heart, but I prepared it. I had three months to prepare - I started in January and the first camp was in March.

"I’m not sure if the players remember it - but if they do, I hope they remember the feeling. I hope it made them feel excited. We have some of these talks. We have a lot about football, but we also have some to spark emotions. This one was clearly from the heart.”

  5. 'Whether I play or not is not important'published at 20:59 BST 9 June

England v Costa Rica (Wed, 21:00 BST)

    England

England defender Marc Guehi, asked about the responsibility of being a senior member of the group: "For me - and everyone else - everyone knows that if we're going to achieve something at this World Cup it is important that everyone is a team player.

"Cliche or not - whether I am playing or not is not important at all. The most important thing is that the team does well and we move through the competition is confidence and trying to achieve our goal."

England v Costa Rica (Wed, 21:00 BST)

    England

England defender Marc Guehi on favourites to win the World Cup and if England are one: "I think you're asking the wrong person here. Because I don't read or watch anything. I don't know what's going on at all.

"All I know is we will find out. It's going to be exciting. There's going to be a lot of good teams and good players."

  7. 'Kane has hit sweet spot of his career'published at 20:58 BST 9 June

England v Costa Rica (Wed, 21:00 BST)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel on Harry Kane: "Kane is a superstar of course and he is getting better and better. He is a fantastic leader. He is in a sweet spot of his career. Quite late in his career but he is sharp, full focussed and in top shape.

"The success and influence he has had in the last two seasons at Bayern Munich has helped him reach this level of his personal potential. He thinks day in, day out about how we can win as a team. That makes him very special.

"He knows we can go very long if you are a team - like Bayern has done in the Champions League. It was pleasure to have him as a player at Bayern and a pleasure to have him as a captain here."

  8. 'We have no chance to win if we can't focus on football'published at 20:56 BST 9 June

England v Costa Rica (Wed, 21:00 BST)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel, asked if he can 'separate the politics from the football' given recent controversies surrounding the tournament: "Yes - and I am very grateful to the FA for letting me separate it and be the head coach, just talking about football. Otherwise, we have no chance to go all the way if that is not the case.

"We need to be focused. It is hard enough if we focus on football. If we are going to be distracted. Also, [if] I give too many opinions without having full knowledge on the situation, it doesn't help in general."

  9. 'We dare to dream'published at 20:54 BST 9 June

England v Costa Rica (Wed, 21:00 BST)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel on whether reaching two Euros finals makes England one of the favourites: “It’s absolutely relevant. If you get to two Euros finals, and reach semi-finals and quarter-finals of the World Cup, then you are there - then you can win it.

"Then maybe it just takes a bit of luck or whatever. I strongly believe we are there, but I also believe we are not the favourites because of the history.

"We know what it takes, and it also requires a calm mindset and focus on our steps. If we want to reach the top of the mountain, we need to start the journey step by step. Otherwise, we’ll get distracted.

"I have belief. We all have belief and a dream. But it comes with hard work, responsibility, commitment and discipline - and sometimes disappointment. That’s all part of it. But we dare to dream, and that’s important.”

    England

England defender Marc Guehi, asked about the identity of Thomas Tuchel's team: "I'd say it will look similar to how it has looked in the qualifying phases; very mindful of having good physical capabilities in our squad and we want to maximise that and impose that on the pitch.

"It's also about understanding our conditions and experiences we've had in different competitions and being mindful of the heat is very important."

  11. 'Once you reach the quarter-final you can win anything'published at 20:51 BST 9 June

England v Costa Rica (Wed, 21:00 BST)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel, asked why he thinks it has been 60 years since the Three Lions have won the World Cup: "It's maybe not one reason, but I think in recent tournaments that England have been there. Once you reach the quarter-finals, you can win any competition. That is my opinion.

"I think it's important to not try to digest this whole tournament in one piece and to focus on what we can influence. First it is prep camp, then we will take care of the group stage. This is only how I know it and how I approached it in club football.

"Once you arrive in the quarter-final, then you can go all the way and the belief will be there. There has to be a lot of work done and respect for our opponents. Don't underestimate the amount of luck you need."

  12. Tuchel speaks highly on O'Reillypublished at 20:48 BST 9 June

England manager Thomas Tuchel, asked about Nico O'Reilly's potential: "There is no doubt that Nico will become a top player. His rise is amazing, to be so influential in such a short time and to create an almost completely new role of a left-back. Even if he plays there he spends most of the time in the left 10, or arrives in number nine positions to score decisive goals for his club. In training, he starts scoring so hopefully we can use his skills.

"He is very humble and hardworking. He has the body, the skillset, talent, and the mindset.

"He will have a top career. I am not sure if it will be at left-back becuase he can play as a left right and central midfielder. A top player."

  13. Mood in the camp 'very relaxed'published at 20:45 BST 9 June

England v Costa Rica (Wed, 21:00 BST)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel on the tone in the training camp: “It’s been very relaxed. We’ve had afternoons off for the players where they can reconnect - they can go out and see friends and family. We had an evening yesterday where friends and family were invited. We had a really lovely barbecue, and there’s been amazing energy in the camp.

"That’s exactly what we had in mind. It should be relaxed - the focus will come by itself. The tension will just rise naturally, especially when we change location to Kansas and then have four days to prepare for the first game.

"Naturally, once we go into the tunnel, it will be match by match after that. The atmosphere has been relaxed and it's important."

Thomas Tuchel's revelation that Bukayo Saka's fitness needs managing is certainly an interesting development.

Saka is clearly a key player for England, so it will be interesting now to see how Tuchel and his staff manage the Arsenal winger during the tournament.

  15. 'We are still building Saka up'published at 20:41 BST 9 June

England v Costa Rica (Wed, 21:00 BST)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel, asked about the Arsenal players in the squad after a busy season: "We still have to take a little bit of care for Bukayo [Saka] who had an injury in March and carried it through to club. He made himself available at the end of the season and did so brilliantly but he was managed in between matches; that continues a bit at the moment. We are building him up.

"Noni [Madueke], Declan [Rice] and Ebs [Eze] are 100 percent available.

"We just came from training and everyone was involved including Bukayo. We have to take the decision in the afternoon on who starts and how many minutes we give.

"They [the Arsenal players] came in very good spirit and shape. I feel them as proud and confident. They know what they did. They had a little period where it was in doubt and they overcame it. It meant a lot to them. They understand they went toe-to-toe with the best team in the world against Paris Sant Germain and lost in the shootout.

"They came in the best spirits and they are happy with that."

  16. Postpublished at 20:39 BST 9 June

England v Costa Rica (Wed, 21:00 BST)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel on managing John Stones' fitness and whether he will start against Costa Rica: "I need to double check with physical department. We always get a second opinion from our performance team about what he did through the week, what he was actually exposed to at Manchester City and not playing this season. This will all play a role when we take a decision.

"Everyone deserves to be in the starting line-up tomorrow. We have strong four central defenders - with Jarell Quansah even five. But good news is Stone is ready to go."

  17. 'Rice one of the best midfielders in Europe'published at 20:37 BST 9 June

England manager Thomas Tuchel on vice-captain Declan Rice and leadership in the team: “We have a leadership group of five or six players - you can call them captains without armbands.

"Declan and Harry [Kane] are the two guys with the armband. Harry is our captain - no doubt about it. And Declan is our second captain. When Harry wasn’t in camp and didn’t play against Wales, we had a choice, and it was a very quick one from me to give it to Declan.

"He has a high football IQ. He takes care of the formation and structure, the adaptation, and the rhythm of our game. He’s had two outstanding seasons with Arsenal - one of their main players in their Champions League campaign. He’s one of the best midfielders in Europe at the moment, full of confidence. That’s why he is my vice-captain."

  18. Postpublished at 20:36 BST 9 June

Thomas Tuchel is asked about the political issues surrounding this World Cup, as well as the price of tickets.

He says he is focussed on the football and is grateful to the FA for letting him focus on coaching. He says if he and his squad don't focus on football then the have no chance of winning.

  19. 'We are not the favourites'published at 20:33 BST 9 June

England v Costa Rica (Wed, 21:00 BST)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel, asked if England are one of the favourites to win the tournament: "How many favourites are there?

"No, we're not the top favourites. We can't be because we haven't won it for so many years. There are proven winners in the tournament with more success. We compete, we dream big and we know what it takes. Responsibility is on the effort and that is where the focus is.

"We see ourselves as competitors and challengers. We want to go all the way but I don't think we are the heavy favourites."

England v Costa Rica (Wed, 21:00 BST)

"Before this, we have two more matches to play and hopefully we take the next step. Hopefully we all stay healthy and have the full availability for Croatia."
