There's not much between the big three. It's going to come down to tactics, competitive spirit and who wants it more.

Keely is so experienced in this event and she's only 24. She's raced around the world at multiple championships and has delivered every time. She likes the feeling of pain and how far she can push herself - she relishes that and you can see that in her performances and how she can dig deeper.

Switzerland's Audrey Werro, the third fastest woman over 800m, pretty much matches Hodgkinson's run by comfortably winning her heat in a time of 1:57.84.

Dutch star Femke Broeders-Bol, who has moved up from 400m hurdles to the 800m, strolls home to win the second heat in 1:59.96.

"The championship is a fresh start. It felt good. The standard has gone up. That was one minute 57 in the heats!

"We are dragging the best out of each other and the standard keeps getting higher and higher, but it brings out the best in me."

Britain's Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson is safely through to Thursday's semi-finals, winning her heat in a comfortable one minute 57.28 seconds.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen fought back from "the lowest of lows" to win a stunning 5,000m gold at the European Athletics Championships after almost a year out with injury.

The Norwegian great underwent Achilles surgery in January and only returned to training six weeks ago.

However, 324 days after he last took to the track, Ingebrigtsen produced an astonishing late surge to claim victory.

The 25-year-old clocked 13 minutes 15.29 seconds to win a record-equalling seventh gold at these championships, moving level with Croatian discus thrower Sandra Elkasevic.

"With 600m to go, I knew I was going to win. I was just hoping I was not going to get too tired," Ingebrigtsen told BBC Sport.

"I doubted myself every day and every minute leading up to the last lap, but I am always hoping.

"Coming from the lowest of lows to be European champion again means the world to me. Not even I believed it could happen coming here."

Amy Hunt had her coming of age moment as she stormed to 100m glory to claim her first senior international title and deliver Britain's first gold medal of the European Athletics Championships.

Hunt announced herself on the sport's global stage last year with world 200m silver in Tokyo - the first individual international medal of her senior career.

Having backed that up with Commonwealth 100m silver two weeks ago, the 24-year-old would not be denied gold this time in Birmingham.

"I have had such a string of silvers and I was starting to get a bit fed up with it, so I thought it was time for gold," Hunt, who won in 11 seconds flat, told BBC Sport.

"My parents gifted me these gold earrings to finally level up, because I wear all-silver jewellery.

"They said it was time for gold - they left me that note two nights ago - so it made me quite emotional.

"It was definitely time for me to come of age here."

BBC Sport

The first European Athletics Championships to be held in Great Britain take place in Birmingham from 10-16 August.

The Championships get under way at Alexander Stadium on Monday, with Britain fielding a team of 96 athletes.

Among the British stars on show are defending champions Keely Hodgkinson and Dina Asher-Smith, local boy Matthew Hudson-Smith, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Amy Hunt, Georgia Hunter Bell and Jake Wightman.

Sweden's Armand Duplantis, Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Greece's Miltiadis Tentoglou are all seeking to win their fourth successive European titles, while Hodgkinson, Italy's Marcell Jacobs and Ukraine's Yaroslava Mahuchikh are targeting three in a row.

Athletes from 49 nations will compete for 50 gold medals, including a mixed 4x100m relay for the first time.
