We have learned more about yesterday's fatal school shooting as the day has gone on. But there are a few details still missing.
Here are the biggest unknowns:
Local officials just hosted a press conference about the shooting. Here's what we've learned.
Regan Morris
Reporting from Los Angeles
Authorities in Bend, Oregon, say the shooting occurred in a "special needs" classroom and that the students killed and wounded were all in that classroom.
“Special needs” in US public schools are extremely varied, and students are often lumped together in school classrooms despite extremely varied needs.
Children labeled “special needs” can range from pupils with severe physical and mental disabilities to mild attention deficits to specific learning disabilities like dyslexia.
US federal law says every child is entitled to a Free and Appropriate Public Education, known as FAPE, and children with learning disabilities are offered extra teaching and accommodations.
The School Resource Officer (SRO) was not present at Silver Rail Elementary at the time of the shooting.
SROs are armed law enforcement officers who work full or part-time at schools and are responsible for safety and crime prevention.
The press conference has now ended.
We will bring you a round up of the key details shortly. Stick with us.

The gunman was located in the special needs classroom when he was shot by the bystander, police say.
There were no additional students in the classroom besides the victims, they say.
Krantz says that the teacher "who was willing to stand and fight for her children" deserves to be praised.
"I think we all recognise that is true heroism, and we don't see that a lot in society."
Mike Krantz is asked for further details about the firearm.
He says a 12-gauge pump action shotgun was used in the shooting and the origin of the gun is still in question.
Image source, ReutersPolice Chief Krantz says any questions about the shooter's mental health or motivations will become clear over the course of the investigation.
"Everyone wants to know why, including us," he says, adding that it will take time.
"We may never get that full answer, but we want it."
The classroom where all of the victims were shot on Thursday was a "special needs" classroom with children of different ages, officials say.
The attacker had previously attended the school as a special needs student, and had spent time in that room as a pupil, they add.
Members of the press are now fielding questions.
The first, directed towards Steve Cook, asks what safety measures are in place at Silver Rail.
He says the students practice lockdown drills twice a year and the school had its last one around two weeks ago.
The district recently replaced every door lock in each of its schools so the locks are visible from anywhere in the classroom and ensure they don't need to be locked by exiting the classroom, he adds.
Police department communications manager Sheila Miller identifies the teacher who was killed as 25-year-old Meghan Lambert, and reads out a statement from her family.
Lambert had a passion for playing sports, and was a coach, she says.
"Her goal was to be an educator and teach in the school district she loved," Miller says, adding that her job at Silver Rail Elementary was her first job as a teacher. "This was her dream job."
"She was compassionate and had a big heart," Miller adds. "Meghan loved those children."
Image source, ReutersCook goes on to praise the two community members who intervened to stop the attack.
"Your actions saved lives," he says, addressing the father who shot the attacker, and the teacher who tackled him an attempt to seize his weapon.
He says the school will be investigating its own emergency response procedure in the wake of the shooting.
Image source, ReutersSchool district leader Steven Cook is now addressing the media.
He says he held a meeting with Silver Rail staff today and says the tragedy has had a "substantial impact" on them and all of the school.
He adds this is a "terrifying and tragic" incident that will have an impact "for years to come".
Cook tears up as he thanks people for their support and courage and says families are showing the community "how to wrap our arms around our children".
A search warrant has been executed at the suspect's home and the search is ongoing, Chief Krantz says.
He identified the suspect as 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, who previously attended the school but is not enrolled at the local high school.
Police believe John travelled to the elementary school on foot, adding that police are still investigating his exact moves and how he acquired the gun.
"We will identify the suspect in this case one time," Krantz says. "I will not say his name again."
Some questions about the incident, Krantz says "may never be answered".
The suspect had about 44 more rounds of ammo with him when he was stopped, the police chief says.
In addition to the father who fatally shot the attacker, Krantz says there is another person whose heroic action also saved lives.
A teacher in the classroom that was attacked hurled a cell phone at the killer, before "tackling" him and fighting to disarm him of his shotgun.
"She was not injured in that incident but she almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed," he says.
Krantz says a seven-year-old girl is in serious but stable condition while a 54-year-old teacher is also getting treatment following the shooting.
He adds that life-saving care was attempted on one boy at the scene while two other boys and a teacher, 25-year old Meghan Lambert, also died on the scene.
He names one of the children as five-year old Rhoam Summer.
Image source, ReutersKrantz says the 36-year-old man who stopped the suspect had parked at the school and taken out a .40-caliber pistol that was legally secured in his car.
Carrying the pistol, he entered through the doors the suspect had forced open, Krantz says.
He heard gunshots and found the suspect engaged in a physical altercation with a teacher, he adds.
"He then went to the classroom where the struggle was under way and fired his weapon, striking the suspect multiple times," he says.
Krantz says the suspect was seen by a member of the public approaching a fence, and throwing his weapon over before climbing it himself.
As he entered the school property, a person confronted him, and was fired upon.
The gunman then shot through a glass entrance to enter the school.
The gunman fired at least 15 shots, he says, adding that all of the dead were found in one classroom.
Chief Mike Krantz recaps the details he laid out in yesterday's press conference.
He says police first received a call of an active shooter at 12:59 local time, before receiving several calls minutes later saying the shooter had entered the school.
Police arrived on the scene at 13:01 and found the shooter dead, while four other people, a five-year-old, eight-year-old, 11-year-old and 25-year-old teacher had also been killed.
