We have learned more about yesterday's fatal school shooting as the day has gone on. But there are a few details still missing.

    Here are the biggest unknowns:

    • The victims' identities - Police named one child, Rhoam Summer, and one teacher, Meghann Lambert, but have not shared the identities of the others who were shot
    • The motive of the alleged shooter - Police have said the shooter had previously been a "special needs" student at the school before he attacked the special needs classroom, but it's not clear whether that was a factor
    • How the alleged shooter got hold of the 12-gauge shotgun - We know that it was purchased by his mother
    • The identity of the teacher who threw a mobile phone at the attacker before wrestling with him has not been released - But the man who killed the gunman has been identified by his family as Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old father of two pupils at the school

  3. What we learned from the news conferencepublished at 23:38 BST 16 October

Local officials just hosted a press conference about the shooting. Here's what we've learned.

    • The bystander, a father of students at the school, shot the suspect with a .40 calibre pistol, which had been legally secured in his car
  4. 'Special needs' can mean many different things in US schoolspublished at 23:05 BST 16 October

    Regan Morris
    Reporting from Los Angeles

Authorities in Bend, Oregon, say the shooting occurred in a "special needs" classroom and that the students killed and wounded were all in that classroom.

“Special needs” in US public schools are extremely varied, and students are often lumped together in school classrooms despite extremely varied needs.

Children labeled “special needs” can range from pupils with severe physical and mental disabilities to mild attention deficits to specific learning disabilities like dyslexia.

US federal law says every child is entitled to a Free and Appropriate Public Education, known as FAPE, and children with learning disabilities are offered extra teaching and accommodations.

The School Resource Officer (SRO) was not present at Silver Rail Elementary at the time of the shooting.

SROs are armed law enforcement officers who work full or part-time at schools and are responsible for safety and crime prevention.

Members of the press are now fielding questions.

The first, directed towards Steve Cook, asks what safety measures are in place at Silver Rail.

He says the students practice lockdown drills twice a year and the school had its last one around two weeks ago.

The district recently replaced every door lock in each of its schools so the locks are visible from anywhere in the classroom and ensure they don't need to be locked by exiting the classroom, he adds.

Police department communications manager Sheila Miller identifies the teacher who was killed as 25-year-old Meghan Lambert, and reads out a statement from her family.

Lambert had a passion for playing sports, and was a coach, she says.

"Her goal was to be an educator and teach in the school district she loved," Miller says, adding that her job at Silver Rail Elementary was her first job as a teacher. "This was her dream job."

"She was compassionate and had a big heart," Miller adds. "Meghan loved those children."

    Breaking

A search warrant has been executed at the suspect's home and the search is ongoing, Chief Krantz says.

He identified the suspect as 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, who previously attended the school but is not enrolled at the local high school.

Police believe John travelled to the elementary school on foot, adding that police are still investigating his exact moves and how he acquired the gun.

"We will identify the suspect in this case one time," Krantz says. "I will not say his name again."

Some questions about the incident, Krantz says "may never be answered".

The suspect had about 44 more rounds of ammo with him when he was stopped, the police chief says.

A teacher in the classroom that was attacked hurled a cell phone at the killer, before "tackling" him and fighting to disarm him of his shotgun.

"She was not injured in that incident but she almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed," he says.

Krantz says a seven-year-old girl is in serious but stable condition while a 54-year-old teacher is also getting treatment following the shooting.

He adds that life-saving care was attempted on one boy at the scene while two other boys and a teacher, 25-year old Meghan Lambert, also died on the scene.

Carrying the pistol, he entered through the doors the suspect had forced open, Krantz says.

He heard gunshots and found the suspect engaged in a physical altercation with a teacher, he adds.

"He then went to the classroom where the struggle was under way and fired his weapon, striking the suspect multiple times," he says.

  19. At least 15 shots fired inside school, police saypublished at 22:13 BST 16 October

Krantz says the suspect was seen by a member of the public approaching a fence, and throwing his weapon over before climbing it himself.

As he entered the school property, a person confronted him, and was fired upon.
