    St Albans 2-0 Histon

    Euan Duncan reports
St Albans City have won promotion to the Nationwide Conference beating Histon at Broadhall Way.

A goal in either half enabled St Albans City to clinch the promotion their league form deserved but it was only after a shaky opening where they struggled for possession.

But from their first real attack leading scorer Lee Clarke drilled in his 26th goal of the season from close range after a low cross by Chris Seeby.

Strike partner Hakim squandered a chance one on one to double the lead shortly afterwards but made no mistake nine minutes after the interval when a defensive error put him in the clear and he calmly put his shot inside a post.

Further goals should have followed later on for St Albans but the dismissal of Histon defender Hipperson for two yellow cards 13 minutes from time ensured the closing stages weren't stressful.

"With all the things I've done in 28 seasons of non-league football this is the best achievement of all!"
    Colin Lippiatt, St Albans Manager

The Saints go marching into the Conference and Hertfordshire derbys with Stevenage Borough, the host club for the final.

After the match Colin Lippiatt was delighted with promotion:

"It was going to be a very tight game, these games always are tight, nervous, iffy but we showed a lot of courage" he said.

"With all the things I've done in 28 seasons of non-league football this is the best achievement of all!"

In the 55 years I have followed the Saints this is the first time they have won anything important. The atmosphere, support and performance at Stevenage was tremendous. Congratulations to all concerned with my home town club.Their success is well overdue. Histon are a fine side and I wish them well for the future.

Congratulations Saints. Excellent achievement. Pleased for all the die hards that have followed Saints through thick and thin over the years and those that work so hard for the love of the club. That was a day to remember.

Sunday 7 May 2006 will be a day to remember for all StAlbans fans especially those of us who were at the play-off game No matter what happens next season the achievment in getting the team into the Conference proper is one the greatest in non-league football. Had Histo won their achievment would have been no less as it would have been successive promotions. However, it is The Saints who go marching on and the delights of games at Exeter York and especially Stevenage await. For now until we see the fixture list and the start of the new season these are halcyon days. St Albans City playing live on tv in front of 2000+ home fans...

Congratulations on your success to the entire team; players of course, but to everyone whose efforts have made the city proud of you. Here's to next season - Nationwide - precisely
