Histon - the preview

Each week, BBC Radio Cambridgeshire's Dave Remnant gives his expert opinion and insight on Histon's next match.

Histon v Halifax Town – 8th March 2008

Aldershot Town v Histon – 11th March 2008

Having had a bad day at the office, the last thing I wanted to see was something similar from Histon on Tuesday evening at the Glassworld Stadium.

"I'll be willing Histon into opening their account against them and to deposit the ball in the back of their net with a great deal of interest."

Dave Remnant doesn't like the Halifax building society adverts

Until the second Stevenage goal, the match could have gone either way but from that moment on, gaps started to appear as an equaliser was sought and rather like one of David Attenborough’s reptiles, the opposition were able to strike when the prey was most vulnerable.

It doesn’t help the cause when you lose players in good form and Danny Wright’s illness combined with Patrick Ada’s suspension was wretched timing.

Yet after the game, I did overhear several fans debating whether the fringe players are finding things just a little too hot at Blue Square Premier Level.

Yes, the squad was increased at the start of the season but several of those signed have now moved on to pastures new and somehow need replacing with quality rather than just promise.

I personally feel the final score line was harsh and having witnessed a second bizarre penalty award in the space of a week, am thinking of writing to the producers of, ‘A Question Of Sport’, to include a round of referee gaffes.

How different things had been at Burton, when for the fourth time of asking, the Stutes deservedly took the honours with a display that certainly had the passion and flair that Steve Fallon felt was lacking in midweek.

Maintaining that level on a consistent basis must be one of the long term aims, but to do this alongside the bigger full time clubs really is a monumental task and I take my hat off to all those involved at Bridge Road for their achievements so far.

When one looks at the league table, several of the sides above Histon are able to afford that luxury and as the table stands at the moment, the Stutes have only been able to beat two teams above them, namely Cambridge United and Burton Albion.

Any more slip ups could well see their odds of reaching the play-offs getting as long as the B.F.G’s inside leg measurement, so one hopes that things can be quickly turned around on Saturday, when Halifax Town visit the Glassworld.

Back in August at the Grey, sorry the Shay Stadium, the fixture ended goalless in a dour encounter and having then lost to them in the Setanta Shield near Christmas in a quite awful match, it’s about time that they were put in their place.

I only have to look at those irritating commercials for the Halifax Building Society to somehow will Histon into opening their account against them and to deposit the ball in the back of their net with a great deal of interest.

Looming large on the horizon just three days later is a daunting trip to runaway leaders Aldershot Town, when a full complement of players to choose from and a top notch performance will be required to keep the opposition at bay.

The Shots took the points earlier in the campaign but if the management can spur the players on to reproduce their second half performance on that particular evening, anything is possible.

There’s live commentary from the Recreation Ground next Tuesday with the match kicking off at 7.45pm and regular updates on Saturday’s clash with Halifax on the BBC Radio Cambridgeshire Sports Show which gets under way at 2pm.

CUFC Fan
Well done Histon, you were the only team on that pitch who put any effort in. Surely the Cambridge players must all be on the transfer list after that.

Cambridge United til i die
come on the US. 2-0

Charlie
Was at the Basingstoke game at the weekend, true sign of a champion team, can score in the last mintue. I'll be there again tomorrow! Lets show the U's that the Stutes are the best side in Cambridgeshire! P.s. Aider will get a magic hat trick, 3-0 ;)

Howard Cradock
Last weekends game was like a roller coaster ride, up and down like a yoo - yoo, but the stutes came through thanks to a real team effort and magical play from Ian Cambridge on 90 min. Good luck at Northwood and a convincing victory is on the cards.

FTM
Let's get behind The Stutes on Saturday and hope they can score a hatfull to silence the doubters. Histon are still top of the league and doing pretty well. FGH!

antony wilson

My apologies to Adrian Jolliffe, an astute thespian of the Bard of Avon and avid St.Albans fan. Sorry guv, just a typo but I'm sure the swans fancied Sylvia as well!

Norman
come on you saints

Adrian Jolliffe
Re the Shakespeare quote in the St. Albans-Histon match preview, it's "swains" not swans! How about this?: Full fathom five-nil thy full-time scoreline; Had this bet at Coral's made, Nothing of St. Albans that will fade, But doth secure an end of season league change Into stadia rich and strange... Regards, Adrian PS will be at Stevenage wearing a very long blue and yellow scarf!

Katie
Wisshing everyone at Histon Football Club all the best, win or lose they are still one of the most exciting clubs in this area with a great family atmosphere. Good luck once again to all the lads and here's to another super Kendo Hat-trick!!! Go on you rip roaring Stutes!!!
