What a brilliant play that was on Flavio Cobolli's second serve. Arthur Fery just didn't hold back, he leant into the return and he didn't hesitate because he knew he had his opponent at stretch.

You talk to players about what to do on big points and so many of them are apprehensive to do the right thing, but he did absolutely the perfect thing there.

What on earth must be going through Arthur Fery’s mind right now?

Hopefully not as much as in the minds of those of us who must try to put his valiant efforts into words...

The British wildcard should not be doing this. At the start of last year he was still unable to play singles matches because of the bone stress injury in his arm which hindered him for 18 months.

Only one wildcard has ever reached a Wimbledon men's singles semi-final. 25 years on, could it really be happening again?

Their respective reactions tell you that Fery, and the Centre Court crowd, believe.

Alexander Zverev powers an ace down the middle to give him the perfect start as he serves for the second set.

But the world number three fires into the net after a short rally to give Taylor Fritz a chance.

However, a return from the American loops into the air and Zverev rises to hit a fine overhead winner.

Fritz then fails to return twice more and the second set is secured for Zverev.

What are we witnessing??

Arthur Fery matches that cushioned volley from Cobolli in the previous point with one of his own.

The Italian reaches it but his lob is long.

The wildcard is a set away from a Wimbledon semi! What a story.

Fery taking time to head off court for a comfort break as Cobolli is left chuntering to himself/his coaching box at the changeover.

Beautiful cushioned volley at the net from the Italian keeps him alive in this second set.

An ace gives Taylor Fritz the perfect start in the game and Alexander Zverev can't return the next serve.

However, a double fault allows Zverev back in. The American then doesn't assert himself in a rally and Zverev punishes him with a forehand winner.

A shot into the net gives Zverev a break point and when Fritz goes long, the German moves within a game of the second set.

That is costly from the sixth seed, who was leading the game 30-0.

Arthur Fery has got to continue to be aggressive here.

When he's had the short ball, he has jumped on it, he has attacked the backhand, he hasn't hesitated and he has kept coming forward.

All you can ask of Flavio Cobolli is to see whether he can come up with something extra special. This tie-break is a huge moment.

But another loose shot from Cobolli hands the initiative back.

Flavio Cobolli not giving this up. Sends Fery racing left and right in that point and eventually it's too much.

Fery has this mental thing where he doesn't have anything to lose. He is hitting his shots and they are going in.

Flavio Cobolli batters a second-serve return into the net and is furious with himself.

With good reason, he's up against it now. Big serve again though gets him back within two.

A strong serve from Alexander Zverev forces Taylor Fritz deep and his looped return goes well beyond the baseline.

Fritz is long again in a short rally as the American battles but Zverev's strong serve is difficult to return.

A forehand into the net from the German gives Fritz a point but he holds to 15 with a volley winner.

And there's the mini-break as a Cobolli forehand drifts inches wide.

Big serve limits the damage but still advantage Fery. Early days of course.

Can't start a tie-break any better than an ace. Fery cool as ice.

You don't reach top 10 in the world or a French Open final without showing some nerve, and Flavio Cobolli showed that there.

That was only Arthur Fery's fifth ace of the match. An ideal way to start a tie-break.

Yep, a Fery return goes wide and we're into a breaker, people.

Cracking match this, proper tennis.

Fery on the defensive but comes so close to what would have been a ridiculous down-the-line winner. 15-30 on the Cobolli serve.

Big big booming serve makes it 30-30. Credit to Cobolli. He puts away a forehand soon after to move within a point of a tie-break.
