After coming through qualifying to make his Grand Slam singles main draw debut, Great Britain’s Toby Samuel, 23, lost in three sets to Australian eighth seed Alex de Minaur 6-4 6-4 6-2.

At the opposite end of the career spectrum, former champion Stan Wawrinka said farewell to Roland Garros in the first round, losing to Jesper de Jong in four sets.

Czech Jiri Lehecka has been Monday's biggest casualty in the men’s draw, with the 12th seed losing in straight sets to Pablo Carreno Busta, but fellow seeds Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, Casper Ruud, Arthur Rinderknech, Rafael Jodar and Brandon Nakashima have all reached round two.

In the women's singles, Great Britain's Katie Boulter overcame Akasha Urhobo in three sets to reach the second round, where she will face Austria's Anastasia Potapova.

Four-time women’s champion Iga Swiatek lost just three games as she crushed Australian teenager Emerson Jones in straight sets, while second seed Elena Rybakina was similarly ruthless in her 6-2 6-2 win over Veronika Erjavec.

Seventh seed Elina Svitolina fought back from a set down to beat Anna Bondar in a third-set tie-break while American Amanda Anisimova, Italian Jasmine Paolini, and Belgium’s Elise Mertens also advanced.

On former champion Stan Wawrinka, who was beaten in the first round of his final French Open appearance earlier today:

He has a wonderful tennis style and it's a very different style. That uniqueness allowed him to compete with Rafa [Nadal], Novak [Djokovic] and Andy [Murray] - brute force, a beautiful backhand and a very competitive guy who loved the long matches.

We've seen some amazing matches from him, five-setters, and he's a crowd-pleaser because he's a shot-maker. People respond to that.

He's a very likeable guy and pretty normal as well. He enjoys his life outside of tennis but my respect for him is up there with anything because he managed to gatecrash that party [of Nadal, Roger Federer and Djokovic], just like Andy did when he was around.

Veteran Frenchman Gael Monfils, playing in his final French Open, is currently in action on Court Philippe-Chatrier, where he trails compatriot Huge Gaston by one set.

The tournament has already said farewell to one legend of the game today, with Stan Wawrinka going down in four sets to Jesper de Jong.

I'm pleased Boulter got through that match because it was a tough match not knowing the opponent. It was scrappy but she just found a little bit more quality towards the end there, especially on serve.

Job done and she moves onto the second round. I'm sure she'll be picking up her level and she'll have to for that second-round match.

Lovely stuff from Katie Boulter, coming into the net, picking up Akasha Urhobo's low forehand and whipping the ball cross-court to take a 15-30 lead.

Urhobo responds with a big first serve which Boulter can't return into the court but an untimely forehand unforced error from the American presents Boulter with her first match point.

However, there's a groan when Akasha Urhobo forces a forehand error to complete the break.

The American still has to serve to stay in this match.

It's been an extremely scrappy match but the one thing you will say is when it's counted now in this final set, Katie Boulter has found the better rhythm on serve. A little bit more consistency has basically been the difference.

The ice bath is calling Casper Ruud. The two-time runner-up has come through a five-setter against Roman Safiullin.

He had match points in the third set but was unable to convert and, after struggling physically in the third and fourth sets, gets it done in the decider.

She gets a second point on the board courtesy of a backhand from Katie Boulter which clips the net and pings back at her.

However, a timely first serve - wide onto Urhobo's backhand - secures the hold.

It's been really good serving from Katie Boulter in that game. She made her first serves and then executed really well there after. Good game, and good cushion now at 4-1.
