The state of the emotion for Alexander Zverev - signing the plaque which will be hung on a wall and will stay there forever.

He has joined all the greats. Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and all the greats who have come before that.

It has been such an incredible run for him.

    Cobolli 1-6 6-4 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 1-6 Zverev

French Open champion Alexander Zverev, speaking on Court Philippe-Chatrier: "I would like to thank my team.

"It is funny because I probably have the longest lasting team out of anybody in the world. I have the longest lasting coach, my father. I can't get rid of him. He has been here for 29 years.

"My brother also 29 years. I can't get rid of him either. I have my physical trainer who we have been working with since 2014, since I was 16 years old. That is also probably one of the longest relationships on tour. I would like to thank him as well. My best friend, who has been in the box for also over 10 years. One of the most important people for me because he keeps me happy, which is very difficult to do.

"Sergei [manager], we have been working together for over 10 years. Thank you very much for sticking with me. It has been a great run. The physio is new, he has been here for like two weeks, so a great start to a relationship. Well done! Don't ask for a bonus now. Nothing to do with you.

"I want to say thank you to everyone we have been through so much. We have been through injury, heartbreaks, losses, we have been losers at times in the most important moments. At the end of the day, we are Grand Slam champions now and that is what counts."

  7. 'Finally, it is a happy ending'published at 19:22 BST

More from French Open champion Alexander Zverev, speaking on Court Philippe-Chatrier: "I want to say a big thank you from all the players to Amelie [Mauresmo, tournament director]. For me, from the Grand Slams, she is doing everything possible for the players to feel unbelievably welcome. It is incredible to see what you have done here in the last couple of years. Also, the facilities are unbelievable that we have two courts with a roof. So many things have changed since you took over, and they are positive as well.

"Then I want to thank the French federation for making everything possible, the ball kids, the linesmen, everyone who put so much effort into this week. Maybe it is a bit forgotten in the two weeks - it is unbelievable the effort everyone puts in.

"I would really like to thank the crowd. This court is so special to me in so many ways. I have had the best moments of my life in this court and I have had the worst moment of my life on this court.

"I was laid in that corner four years ago with seven broken ligaments and two fractured bones. I lost a Grand Slam final here two years ago. But now, finally, it is a happy ending.

"Thank you very much to the crowd. It has been a really felt like the crowd was pushing me throughout the entire two weeks. Without you guys, I would have definitely not won the tournament, so thank you very much."

French Open champion Alexander Zverev, speaking on Court Philippe-Chatrier: "Well, first of all, I want to congratulate Flavio. Unbelievable two weeks reaching a first Grand Slam final and playing this way in your first Grand Slam final is incredible. Not many people do that. Really, from the bottom of my heart, I hope you will hold one of these trophies very soon.

"I also want to congratulate the team because, for me, it is one of the nicest teams on tour. Papa [Stefano Cobolli] you are one of the best people on tour. We always have great conversations. I also enjoy being around you guys. So you deserve it in the future. I am confident you will get one."

From the worst moment in his career to the best...

Four years ago, Alexander Zverev left Court Phillipe Chatrier in a wheelchair after rupturing ligaments in his ankle in his semi-final against Rafael Nadal.

Today, he walks away with the trophy and can finally call himself a major winner.

Zverev is a Grand Slam champion now. Just all the things that he has gone through in order to accomplish it - he has had to do different things within his game, the things he has got to work on mentally.

The things he has had to do to push his body physically. His fifth set record at Grand Slams is incredible and when he came on tour he was a tall, skinny kid. He was not physical.

More from French Open runner-up Flavio Cobolli:

"Thanks to all the blue wall [of Italian supporters] behind me. I can't look at you otherwise I will cry.

"I want to ask you one thing - it was an incredible run so I want to see all the smiles from you guys because it's been fantastic to be here with you.

"I started playing when I was young and I never expected this kind of result. Now that I'm here, I just want to make something special possible. For me, it's not done, it's only the start and I'm still young so I just want to enjoy every moment I spend on court."

"It's been an honour to share the court with you today. I'm happy for you but also sad because I was close and I feel it.

"Now you've achieved your dream, let me win the next time."

That was far more impressive than if Zverev had just won in straight sets, he now knows that he has the endurance to get the job done and can win multiple majors from here. Cobolli's stock has risen immeasurably after that, he's a dark horse for Wimbledon.

To come out here after the fourth set and to put together that fifth set performance, the resilience and all the things he has been working on for so long, you have to credit him and his team. To get across the finish line here is incredible. He will no longer have to hear he is the best player to not win a major again.

So happy for Zverev - first Grand Slam ever! He can take this momentum into Wimbledon and hopefully perform well in London on the biggest tennis stage. Cobolli played a good game though, and definitely challenged Zverev. Both players did well in this final - remembered for many years to come.

Flavio Cobolli had a great tournament and he had his chances. Was it the fitness that failed in the fifth set? We'll never know, or maybe he'll tell us when he speaks to the press.

But it's Alexander Zverev who is the last man standing.

His first Grand Slam semi-final and final. And he fought back to push Zverev all the way today.

If you're a Zverev fan, what you want is for him to have a Stan Wawrinka-type finish to his career. He's a late winner of a major like Stan, and Stan won three.

Alexander Zverev Sr is the first person to get a hug from the new Grand Slam champion. He embraces his son before everyone else gets a turn.

Some members of his team are in tears. Happy ones, we hope.
