It just emphasises how accomplished Sinner is on all surfaces.

We expected him to be up there winning hard court Grand Slams. The one he hasn't got yet is the French Open [on clay] but the way he's playing on grass is phenomenal.

It's not how we used to know grass-court tennis, he doesn't come to the net that much, but his movement, serving quality and power from the back of the court was so impressive.

    • Yui Kamiji and Zhu Zhenzhen became women's wheelchair doubles champions, while Niels Vink won a fourth successive quad singles title.
    • And... Jannik Sinner retained his men's singles title after he fought back to defeat Alexander Zverev in four sets.

It's interesting times for the champions here over the past four years - two for Carlos Alcaraz and two for Jannik Sinner - when Alcaraz won his second, you thought it might be endless with the style and the way he plays. His game is more grass-court orientated.

But I've got a feeling that if Jannik stays fit, he may win more Wimbledons than Carlos and I didn't expect I would say that.

The way the court plays now, as big as he serves, as hard as he is off the ground - he takes so much time away from his opponents.

It might be a five or six-time [champion] situation for Jannik in the future.

When we reflect over the two weeks, when we look back at that first round when he was down two sets to one and we were thinking Sinner was looking vulnerable, he played OK in the first week and gets through to the quarter-finals.

He got to the semi-final against Novak Djokovic and it was like there was a gear change: "Now I need to step up and deliver against these world-class opponents."

You look at those two performances - straight sets against Djokovic and against Zverev playing as well as I've ever seen Zverev play on a grass court - and Sinner's been able to get the job done.

The way Sinner carries himself off the court reflects on how he is on the court.

He is generally never shouting to his box, never showing too much frustration. He showed a little bit but nothing compared to what he was getting from the racquet of Zverev.

He will be accountable for his decisions, accountable for whatever the outcome of the match. When he was sitting at two sets to one down in the first round, he might have been thinking 'we took the decision to not play a warm-up, maybe it was the wrong decision', but he would never think like that because whatever the decision is going to be the decision, and we go with it. Whatever the outcome, we are never going to doubt the decision because it was the decision.

That has created the champion he is.

Sinner is so good at maintaining that level. There's never really any drops.

It's so incredible to be able to function at that high level for so long.

Besides Sinner's focus and relentless determination, what impressed me most today was his ability to get up after a fall without losing a hit, even with a change of direction if needed. A top skier he was indeed...

I'd give [the level of the match] a nine out of 10.

That's where Zverev deserves so much credit for the part he played. He came into the match having lost nine times in a row against Sinner, but he came out and played in a completely different fashion. He was going for that forehand, his first-serve percentage was incredible.

  12. 'A very, very special day'published at 20:36 BST

    Sinner 6-7 (7-9) 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 6-4 Zverev

More from Jannik Sinner: "Standing here, you can feel the nerves on a Sunday morning when you wake up. It is a very, very special day. You never know how many times you can come back on Sunday. I never take things for granted.

"Playing in front of very, very special people throughout the whole couple of weeks, it has been amazing. You are always amazing to me, thanks for the support. You gave me the most special feeling a tennis player can ever feel like. Thank you so much.

"The last thing I would like to add, it has been a couple of very, very warm days, no rain for the first time which is amazing but I would love to thank all the ball kids for everything you do.

"You make our life on court as simple as possible, thanks to the whole organisation behind the scenes, this is truly the most special tournament we have throughout the year. See you guys next year."

    Sinner 6-7 (7-9) 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 6-4 Zverev

More from Wimbledon men's singles champion Jannik Sinner on being made work hard for the win: "We both started very well, serving very fast, we prepared in the best possible way me and my team. I have to thank the whole team, the whole support I get from the whole box.

"My mum, I see her. She left the stadium a couple of times, being a player it is not easy. In the same time, it has been an amazing final once again. It always takes two players. We try to give everything we have, I’m very happy about the win but mostly very happy also about the level we played. You [the crowd] are the reasons. There is no better place to play tennis."

Wimbledon men's singles champion Jannik Sinner speaking after the trophy presentation on Centre Court: "It feels amazing. 'Sascha', I would like to start with you and your whole team and family. You reached one of your main goals; winning Grand Slams. You made it happen in Paris.

"Today you were so, so close. If you keep playing like this I’m sure you’re going to have this one at home as well. So amazing, keep going. I know another goal is for you to become number one in the world. You are very close. I have to be very careful now! But congrats."

Sinner absorbed an enormous amount for two sets, up until the tie-break.

Then he got one point where he got an unforced error, the first point of that tie-break, and he started to believe that Zverev was going to come off his level.

I thought his intensity and his level - to maintain that throughout the entire match, to not lose his serve, to win some of those important points - it just stood out. It's very hard to do that.

We were waiting for Zverev to come off his level and I think he only just came off it, and that was just enough.

  16. Sinner's show of resiliencepublished at 20:26 BST

    Sinner 6-7 (7-9) 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 6-4 Zverev

By overcoming Alexander Zverev in the final, Jannik Sinner has become the first player in 48 years to win the men's singles title at Wimbledon after overcoming a five-set opening match.

The only other man to achieve that was Bjorn Borg in 1978.

He is the first to manage that at any Slam since Rafael Nadal at the 2011 French Open.

Brilliant match. Sinner proving why he's the best player on the planet. Alcaraz should be worried when he returns. RG was a blip for Jannik. I can see another flurry of titles for the Italian Stallion. Zverev will win more majors but today is Sinner's day.

  18. Zverev jokes: 'Jannik, I don't really like you anymore!'published at 20:22 BST

    Sinner 6-7 (7-9) 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 6-4 Zverev

Wimbledon runner-up Alexander Zverev, speaking after his four-set defeat by Jannik Sinner in the men's singles final: "First of all, Jannik, I don't really like you any more! I lost to you nine times in a row.

"But he showed once again why he is the best player in the world. It was great to share the Centre Court with you on finals weekend. A great honour to be here. It didn't go my way but congratulations to you first of all.

"Also in relation to Jannik's team, who have been with him for many years now. You are number one now but you were outside the top 10 when you started and you are all the way to being Grand Slam champions and world number one. It is a team effort, Jannik will be first to admit it, so congratulations to you as well.

"To my team, we had pretty good two months I would say, even though we lost this final. We had an amazing two months and we came into Wimbledon having never reached the quarter-final, and we reached a first final. At 29, this is the first time I believed I could win this trophy, so thank you to you guys as well.

"I would like to thank the crowd for these two amazing weeks. Every time I played the court was full, I never felt support like that at Wimbledon before and you are a big reason I made it to the final, so thank you for that.

"One more thing, it is very special playing on this Centre Court and it is because of the royal box as well. The amount of special people I see for every single match, especially the final, it is an honour to play in front of you, your Royal Highness and everybody. It is the most unique court in whole world, the royal box is special thing, and it is a massive honour to play on this court, simple as that."

Not the result Alexander Zverev wanted today. But he has broken new ground at Wimbledon over the past two weeks.

He had never been beyond the fourth round before at the All England Club and his run to the final means he will become the new world number two next week, replacing the injured Carlos Alcaraz.
