An eventful first day of the 2026 World Championship final comes to an end.

Wu Yize holds an overnight lead but Shaun Murphy is the sort of player who can put together batches of frames in quick succession and is far from out of it.

They'll play eight more frames from 13:00 BST and then a possible 10 in the evening session from 19:00 to decide the champion.

Enjoy the rest of your evening and we will see you tomorrow!

Wu Yize has been exceptional in long pots, Murphy’s safety is not up to the mark and hence Yize is capitalising on his long pot skills. Wu has been a better striker in the second session and Murphy looked over confident... perhaps that’s the strategy...

It's harder [trailing overnight] but Shaun has got that kind of game that can win bunches of frames in no time at all. He's got that in him.

Wu has just got to be careful that he doesn't think he's won it already. The people who are with him - keep his feet on the ground tonight.

Wu is playing great, but at some point luck runs out. Not everything can keep going in, and he can't keep getting such an absurdly favourable run of the balls.

Wu is potting balls he has no right to pot. Everything in the middle of the pocket as well.

What control Wu Yize showed. Knocking in that long red was great but then the black afterwards was so important.

There is a long, long way to go but he is in front overnight and you can't ask for more than that.

From Shaun's perspective, he has to hope Wu Yize gives him more chances. He is scaring the life out of everyone he plays. I think it's going to be a tough day for Shaun Murphy tomorrow.

That was probably his most measured break of the night. It's been smash, bang, wallop in a good way for a lot of the time.

That whole break was almost like a different Wu Yize - it was very classy.

What can you say about this young man from China?

    That was quite exquisite snooker.

Wu Yize extends his lead to three with another frame-winning break - this time of 91.

He had no right to clear up from the position he was left in but that he did.

What a great session of snooker. What a great final so far.

    Onto Monday we go.

If Murphy is the Magician then Wu should be Wudini!! Great matchup so far.

Wu Yize is reinvigorating and reinventing the game of snooker and it needs to be acknowledged as a great development for the game. Every time he’s at the table he’s looking for a pot no matter the angle or difficulty. Gone are the snooze matches of old.

Some of the pressure pots this lad pulls off. He did it in the semi-final against Mark Allen. It is amazing to watch.

There's more than life in it now.

A scrumptious long red sets him up on the black and now it's his turn to build.

"Wuuuuu" rings out around the arena following that pot.

If Shaun Murphy is going to win this frame, he's not going to do it in one visit.

An unfortunate split of colours leaves him with nothing on and he's forced to play a snooker.

He leads by 39 but this frame has life in it yet for Wu Yize.

Pressure finally telling this evening for Wu Yize, perhaps?

The 22-year-old looks for one of his classic long reds following the break-off but gets it all wrong and leaves the cue ball in the danger zone for Shaun Murphy.

His worst shot of the night? Dennis Taylor thinks so.

A huge opportunity for Murphy now.

If Shaun gets out of this 9-8 behind, he'll be delighted. I'm looking at the scoring on our stats and it's all Wu Yize.

Shaun is not really winning frames when he first gets in, he's taking two or three chances so he's not been at his clinical best.

He tends to save his best for the final sessions of matches.

    Murphy 7-9 Wu

I didn't expect him to get it that quick but there we are!

Shaun Murphy does indeed take the frame. Despite Murphy missing a red to the corner, Wu Yize decides there's too much to do to get back into this one and concedes.

One frame to go this evening.

    Murphy 6-9 Wu

After Shaun Murphy had a fluke go his way in frame 14, Wu Yize nearly had his own there.

He looks for a long red to the corner and it ricochets round the jaws, over to the corner opposite and back again before settling right over the pocket.

It looked for all the world like it was heading in but it doesn't go his way.

Murphy gets back to the table and looks all but certain to take another frame.

  19. Postpublished at 21:30 BST

    Murphy 6-9 Wu

Shaun Murphy spent a long time thinking about the shot he just played but, my word, did it pay off.

Is there such a thing as "plant of the tournament" - because that may well have been it.

Unfortunately for Murphy, there's nothing doing after the shot and he has to settle for a snooker.

    Big frame ahead, this.

Love how Wu Yize's aggression has forced Murphy to attack. This is going to be a great final.
