England Rugby League needs to look at their Union sisters and invest in the players. Make them professionals or they won’t be able to compete. There’s a reason the Red Roses are best in the world. It’s ridiculous these women do this for free!

Sadly far, far behind the best. They live and breathe this game down there; England may be dominant in the North, but that's beans in comparison. When you look at these tiny island populations too. Just nowhere near good enough.

Samoa's Leilani Wilson, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra: "Surreal. I can't believe it. The atmosphere when we came out, the fans turned up. The feelings, I can't explain.

"I don't care wherever I play, footy is footy. Pass, run hard, tackle hard.

"England did give us a run for our money. it's one of the toughest games I've played. We've got to reset, play to our strengths, build connections."

  4. 'I've lived my dream a million times over'published at 08:33 GMT

    FT: England 6-24 Samoa

Retiring England captain Jodie Cunningham: "This group of girls is really special. It's been an honour to captain the side and play in four World Cups. I've lived my dream a million times over. The girls gave everything out there today. It didn't stick. Samoa were fantastic and I wish them all the best in the next round.

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart. My family travel all over the world watching me. I've never been the strongest, the fastest or the best player but I've had great people behind me."

A word for Jodie Cunningham, who played in the second half off the bench for England.

This was a record-extending 38th Test for the English captain, and her last before retirement.

A brilliant career, which sadly does not end in glory.

  6. 'Only going to get better'published at 08:30 GMT

    FT: England 6-24 Samoa

England's Hollie-Mae Dodd, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra: "Really emotional. It's been tough. It's Jodie Cunningham's last game, she's served us for a long time. It was all focused on today and unfortunately we couldn't get the result.

"It's always great to represent your country. We've got some young girls in this squad who are only going to get better."

What I liked about this game is England didn't play badly, Samoa just played better. Particularly when England scored in the second half, I could see them coming back.

I think the spine of this England team are going to be better for it. They're quite young. We're going to see a lot more of Isabel Rowe and Fran Goldthorp. The combinations need work but there's some star power in this England side.

We’re so far behind the other southern hemisphere teams. Like the men’s teams, we're not as good as we think we are. Our teams over here are full of their cast offs.

England never lacked effort, but quality was lacking at key moments - particularly when chasing tries in the second half.

After two blow-out games, it was nice to see a competitive match. But one in which England were ultimately outclassed.

It will be an all-Pacific semi-final line up - Australia, Samoa, New Zealand and Fiji or Papua New Guinea.

The starkest possible reminder of where the balance of power lies in modern rugby league.
