  2. Cunha's rollercoaster performancepublished at 11:25 GMT

Matheus Cunha made Champions League history in Manchester United's win last night, becoming the first player to win a penalty, score and be sent off in a single match in the competition.

The Brazilian forward sparked the second half into life by driving into the box and drawing a foul to win a crucial spot-kick, scored by Bruno Fernandes at the second attempt.

His late double then put Manchester United ahead - with his celebrations with the crowd after scoring his second resulting in a booking.

A late challenge on Leonardo Balerdi in stoppage time then saw Cunha sent off, forcing him to watch the final seconds of the game by the Old Trafford tunnel.

All this result proves is the United players are totally self-interested. Only want to play when the fans are protesting and they're in danger of total embarrassment. Rest of the time? Won't show up because the manager will take the heat instead.

Anyone think that win is gonna change much are absolute fools! Papering over massive cracks! Such a poor side.

Last night's thrilling fightback against Manchester United was a much-needed boost for manager Michael Carrick. Will it actually 'save his job' or just earn him a stay of execution though?

Looking back at some of his predecessors suggests it will be the latter. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho both saw their side fight back from 2-0 down to ease the pressure with 3-2 victories, only to be sacked a few weeks later.

Current Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini was in charge of Atalanta when they visited Old Trafford for a Champions League game in October 2021.

The Italians gained a 2-0 lead by half-time but United hit back with second-half goals from Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Red Devils were thumped 5-0 at home by Liverpool the following weekend, though, and a 4-1 defeat at Watford saw Solskjaer get sacked in November 2021, with Carrick then having three games as interim boss.

Solskjaer's predecessor Mourinho suffered a similar fate as United hosted Newcastle on the back of a four-game winless run in October 2018.

United went 2-0 down inside 10 minutes and were still 2-0 down with 20 minutes left, but Juan Mata and Anthony Martial then drew them level before Alexis Sanchez scored a last-minute winner.

Yet two months later Mourinho was sacked after a 3-1 loss at Liverpool.

Evertonian here. I watched last night and United seemed 1) to lack confidence; 2) to lack cohesion. It looked like there were three or four groups of players who all wanted to do different, conflicting things. Once they started playing one way, it worked. Lacey also looks like a good prospect!!

A good result but Carrick was doomed as soon as he signed. The weak managers, the high-ups, can tolerate loss on the pitch, but if a manager shows signs of strength and success they sack him because he is a threat (Van Gaal, Mourinho). Doomed because of structure and ownership.

All this win proves is that the players are capable of performing better and putting in more effort. They just choose when to turn it on, which isn’t good enough. It’s not the first time either. Bunch of flakes.

    SP, Leicester

The whole team was awful first half, but Dalot in particular was caught out way upfield for both their goals. No-one appeared to cover the left back position whilst he was ambling back.

    Steve, Azerbaijan

Absolutely a turning point for United! This will galvanise the entire club. I can see a comfortable top 4 finish, a deep CL run & winning the FA Cup! GGMU

  9. Real Madrid confident of signing Man Utd's Gabrielpublished at 10:52 GMT

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport Manchester United reporter

Some Manchester United news off the pitch and it concerns teenager JJ Gabriel.

Real Madrid are confident of winning the race to sign the Manchester United forward.

The 16-year-old is registered to United, but has not been back to the club since walking out in September.

Gabriel, who played against Atletico Madrid on United's pre-season tour, had been expected to become the club's youngest debutant in September's Carabao Cup tie against Brighton.

However, he has opted to look elsewhere for senior football and has been training on his own in Spain.

His availability alerted clubs around Europe, including Barcelona and Paris St-Germain, but Jose Mourinho's Real are considered the clear leading contenders for Gabriel's signature.

Gabriel, who scored a hat-trick on his Uefa Youth League debut, has secured a European Union passport, which is expected to make it easier for him to sign for a club outside England.

United would be due compensation should Gabriel leave, although the figure will be lower if he signs for a club outside the Premier League.

Sacking managers without giving them full time to make a difference has proven pointless time and time again at United. Doing it again just perpetuates the chaos. Giving Carrick his full contracted time gives him a chance others should have had and that he should have now.

    David, Hampshire

A thrilling night but still, for me, a sense of papering over the cracks. Fear it’s too late for Carrick. As much as I like to think there’s something in keeping faith. See how they respond vs Villa. Back to square one, no doubt.

    SD, Manchester

We had a similar come from behind win against Lyon but then lost the final and the rest is history. Hopefully United have learnt from it and will build on this win. Give Carrick a full season and back him in the transfer window.

  11. One great comeback - but what happens now?published at 10:42 GMT

    Man Utd 3-2 Roma

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport Manchester United reporter

While Manchester United's victory was certainly well received, it will not mask wider issues.

'Green and gold' protests against the ownership took place before kick-off and during a first-half when the home side were abysmal.

Chants against the Glazer family, minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and director of football Jason Wilcox will not stop just because of this victory, no matter how thrilling.

The sober assessment should also recall United came from behind to beat Atalanta 3-2 at Old Trafford during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's time. They lost 5-0 at home to Liverpool four days later. Within a month, the Norwegian had been sacked.

In October 2018, Jose Mourinho was on the brink of dismissal before a Premier League encounter with Newcastle. United trailed 2-0 after 10 minutes but fought back to win. Mourinho lasted 13 more games.

No-one can know how much time Michael Carrick has bought himself with this victory.

"I don't have a crystal ball to know what happens next," he told Amazon Prime. "We move on to the weekend. We've got a really important game here against Aston Villa, which we need to prepare for."

Chief executive Omar Berrada and Wilcox certainly looked much happier at the final whistle than they had done midway through the first half.

Suddenly United look like they can qualify for the next phase of the Champions League. For the first time since September, Carrick's players are enjoying the winning feeling.

But it will mean little unless they can maintain the momentum against Aston Villa, who were getting beaten heavily by Barcelona as Old Trafford was in tumult.

Carrick needs to be brave and trust the youth. Give Lacey, Thwaites, Amass and Kamason a proper chance. They bring energy, hunger and fearlessness that the United side is crying out for.

    Paul, Manchester

Thought Yoro was great again last night. For a young player playing out of position, he has been a bright light in an otherwise very dull season thus far.

First half was hard to watch! Different team altogether. Second half - what did Carrick say?? Not getting too excited, lets see how we do at Villa! Shea Lacey looked great - that pass! Chuck him in at the weekend!

    Neil, Jersey

I'm delighted for Michael Carrick. Fergie showed us if we stick with a manager instead of just binning them as soon as things go sour, it will pay off. This result is our platform to keep Carrick and go and get top four again.

    Tony, Inverness

The problem with using Arteta or Hurzeler as examples of "sticking by the manager", is that those clubs weren't £1.2b in debt, nor did they have an unsustainable recruitment strategy and a bunch of half-hearted players. United can absolutely stick with Carrick, but their club's situation is much more precarious.

  15. Man Utd fans remain behind Carrickpublished at 10:25 GMT

    Manchester United

While the performances on the pitch have been well below what is expected, Manchester United fans have remained behind manager Michael Carrick.

After another dismal display at Old Trafford where they lost 3-0 against Bournemouth, the fans cheered for Carrick and sung his song.

However, as soon as Carrick disappeared down the tunnel, the fans turned their ire on the players and booed them to show exactly how they felt.

Following last night's win against Roma at home, it will be interesting to see how the fans react when their side host Aston Villa this Sunday.

Every time United look to be "turning a corner" it ends up being a dead end. They deserved to celebrate last night and take some positives from it. But United's board can't act like everything's suddenly okay, they still bottled that first half and got relatively lucky in the second.

    Harry, Manchester

A performance in the second half that can galvanise the squad to go on a run and turn this season around, or it could be another false dawn. Lets hope it is the former.

Before the comeback, Manchester United were heading towards a 10th game without a win in all competitions for the first time in a full season since 1977-78.

Understandably, the home fans were unhappy and made sure to make their feelings known.

They protested twice, releasing hundreds of balloons when the teams came out of the tunnel.

Then there were dozens of yellow tennis balls thrown onto the pitch in a further show of discontent against the ownership.

Green and gold are the colours of Newton Heath, the club United became and have been the colours of the anti-Glazer protests since the American family bought the club in 2005.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who also owns a large stake in Manchester United, has been subject to criticism from disgruntled fans as well.

I said last night prior to kick-off that Shea Lacey needs to be on the pitch, I feel he's more of a team player than Diallo. He's young and wants to do well at United. Pleased he came on and so pleased he did really well in both attack/defence.

    Daz, Cleethorpes

Cunha is fast becoming my favourite United player. Real fight, hunger and desire in every game. He needs to play more centrally where he can do some real damage.

The quality of Italian football in general is probably at it's lowest in decades. United welcome a very good and organised Villa side on the weekend, and they'll probably lose that game. The negativity, toxicity and talk will all come back.
