George Russell suffered a major blow to his title hopes as retirement from the lead of the Canadian Grand Prix handed victory to team-mate Kimi Antonelli.

The two Mercedes drivers had staged a gripping battle for the lead, swapping places several times, and were still nose to tail when Russell's car suddenly stopped on lap 30.

Antonelli's fourth win in a row, coupled with Russell's retirement for what Mercedes said appeared to be a power-unit problem, puts the Italian 43 points ahead in the championship - seven points off two clear wins.

Russell's retirement was not only a bitter blow to the Briton, but it also robbed the race of a no-holds-barred battle between the two Mercedes drivers, the second in two days after a dispute during the sprint on Saturday.

Kimi Antonelli notches up another F1 record this season as the first driver to win his first four races in row. With 43 points to play with heading to the glitz and glamour of Monaco, can anyone stop the Italian teenager?

Mercedes team-mate George Russell will be desperate to bounce back after a bruising Sunday in Montreal. There are plenty of races coming up to claw back points, with the European leg of the campaign getting under way in two weeks' time.

Lewis Hamilton is going home happy, Max Verstappen is too but McLaren will be hard at work after a grand prix of mixed emotions. Lando Norris took the lead but the world champion ended up in the DNF pile, while team-mate Oscar Piastri was foreshadowing a bit of bother starting on the intermediate tyres.

Thanks so much for joining us, folks. Excellent spot by everyone who noticed my copy and paste nightmare of writing 70 laps instead of 68 after the extra formation laps. I'm going to blame the heat, and then put myself in live-text jail.

We'll be back for the Monaco Grand Prix, from 5-7 June.

    See you soon!

  3. 'I don't think we had the pace' - Norrispublished at 23:54 BST 24 May

McLaren's Lando Norris speaking to Sky Sports after he did not finish the race due to an issues with the car: "There was a lot of bits of metal in places there shouldn't have been when I got out so something happened that should not have happened. From my car of course.

"I had no idea what it was, I just got told to box. Highlight was obviously the first lap and then I went out with a bang, literally. It was just not our day, I guess from a decision point of view, I guess we made a decision as a team, I also pushed for it so I take the responsibility for that one but possibly as a team, i don't think we had the pace any way.

"I couldn't even get the tyres above 70 degrees, I struggled a lot and I think we were just not in a good position in cold temperatures. It is a shame, not a lot of things went our way today. We'll take it on the chin, we learn and we come back stronger.

"That's Formula 1 right, sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes you've got to make these decisions and of course it worked for a lap and a half. Just not to be today. We learn from our mistakes and we see what we can do better next time."

  4. Russell 'lost for words'published at 23:51 BST 24 May

George Russell is probably getting ready to board a nice plane back home. But before he does, he's posted this message on X: "Lost for words breaking down from the lead! Really loved the battle with Kimi and wished to have had 40 more of those laps!

"Proud of my weekend in Canada otherwise with pole in the sprint, sprint race win, pole yesterday and leading the race today. Bring on the next race."

Russell's race came to an end on lap 30 when his Mercedes stopped on track.

  5. Tough to overtake - Hamiltonpublished at 23:47 BST 24 May

    Lewis HamiltonImage source, Getty Images

Lewis Hamilton has stepped up to the microphone at Sky Sports to add to his post-race thoughts.

The seven-time world champion says being an F1 driver is "the greatest job in the world" and he feels like the team around him and his performances are all coming together.

He then goes on to explain how hard it is to overtake in the race in this new era of the sport, following his battle with Max Verstappen today.

"It's like 10 times harder than normal," he said, "because you're having to calculate how much battery power you have on the one straight, then the next straight, and each time you're like guesstimating what you're going to have. It's not great, but it is what it is.

"I was grateful that I was finally able to pass him."

  6. 'Nightmare of a weekend' - Leclercpublished at 23:44 BST 24 May

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc talking to Sky Sports after finishing fourth in Canada: "I think there's no blames put on anybody else other than me, honestly. It is a bit of a nightmare of a weekend, I have been struggling like crazy, since FP1, the problem has been the same. Unfortunately I could not find a solution which was not nice.

"But the confidence is everything on a track like this, with those bumps and putting those tyres in the right window is everything and I thought that on the race with multiple laps it would be a lot better but I never put the tyres in the right window and I had 0 confidence.

"What was possible with the car, I think Lewis did an incredible job, I don't think there was much in the car if you look where Lewis is today, so I think second was the very best we could do as a team. I could not achieve that this weekend but Lewis did an incredible job."

  8. 'We half-enjoyed watching them' - Wolffpublished at 23:38 BST 24 May

Mercedes' boss Toto Wolff talking on Sky Sports: "As a team we have had so many situations where it was bittersweet. We are extremely happy for one driver and deserving and then you feel gutted for the other one. It is difficult.

"But in any way, Kimi has done a splendid job today and deserves the win. But George, it is a shame because he was in the lead of the race. We half-enjoyed watching them, how they fought it out and we wished we would have had a one-two."

"Every time when we have thought about saying 'we've had enough for the moment', the next two laps were fast again. As long as we maintain that gap it was OK watching it but obviously it can go wrong. Not because one wants to hit the other one."

James: Incredible race. I think they've found a great sweet spot with these regulations. Looking forward to the rest of the season, especially if the cars can follow as closely as this.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen who finished the race in P3: "I had some cool battles out there, racing back up front is always better, right? For us to have our first podium, of course, is really positive. Very happy with that. Cool battle with Lewis [Hamilton] as well at the end. We kept pushing until the line and in a weekend when it's not that easy to get things right, for us to be on the podium here is extremely positive. Naturally very happy with that."

On what it is that he and his team Isack Hadjar need to do to match the cars up front: "Keep working and improving better than our competition. That's the target but we will see over the coming races, what we can do."

  13. 'It's an amazing feeling' - Hamiltonpublished at 23:18 BST 24 May

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton after finishing P2: "Firstly, I have to say a huge thank you to my team here. These guys have welcomed me with open arms.

"It's been really tough over the past year and a bit so to finally find our sweet spot and have a good weekend, it's an amazing feeling to be back up here, especially with these guys being so quick and I actually got to have a race with Max which is great.

"We've got an amazing crowd here. I love this track, I cant wait to come back

"I think it's definitely encouraging given that this weekend, Mercedes brought a big upgrade, a lot of people brought them here, we brought our big one in Miami and the team are working really hard back at the factory so hopefully we've got some things on the way.

"Considering this is a really straight circuit and we just managed to hold on and get this result, it definitely gives me high hopes for what's ahead but we've got to keep pushing and keep trying to extract more."

Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli who wins the Canadian Grand Prix: "First of all thank you everyone for coming this weekend. it was a really fun battle, to be fair, with George. We were pretty much on the limit. It was not easy today, with the wind, very gusty.

"Turn 10 is very difficult, I think one lap, he locked up and I went in front and then I locked up so it was very close and it was a shame for him to have a failure because it would have been a very cool battle, but we will take it. Another win, I am very happy and massive thanks to the team."

On whether he was able to manage the car after George's DNF: "When I was on my own, I was trying to really manage the tyres because I started to have some graining, graining started to appear on the front-left tyre. It was just a weird feeling, the tyre was not really biting but at the end we had the good pace when the temperature was coming in and now looking forward to the next one."

The crowd loves seeing Lewis Hamilton on the podium, and Max Verstappen gets a big cheer, too. This is the first time the Dutchman has finished in the top three, while this is Hamilton's second trip to the podium after the Chinese Grand Prix in March.

Antonelli is then lifted into the air by his two rivals.

The victory for Kimi Antonelli - and the retirement for Mercedes team-mate George Russell - puts him 43 points clear at the top of the drivers' championship. It was a great fight between himself and Russell, but would have come out on top if the Briton had stayed in the race?

The second place for Lewis Hamilton lifts him above Lando Norris, who was also a DNF, and into fourth spot, three points off Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc.
