There was one further faultless performance last night... John Murray's commentary on 5 Live had me on the edge of my mattress in France and fully conveyed the unfolding drama along with the collective bewilderment that we were refusing to mess it up! A wonderful night.

  6. Kane moves on to six goalspublished at 10:52 BST

    Mexico 2-3 England

If England are to go further into this tournament, captain Harry Kane will more than likely have a big hand in that.

He moved to six goals for this tournament - his 14th World Cup goal and also a sixth in the knockout stages.

This is only the third time an England player has scored six goals in a major tournament – the others are Gary Lineker in the 1986 World Cup and Kane himself at the 2018 World Cup.

Kane’s six World Cup penalty goals are two more than anyone else in history (excl. shoot-outs).

  7. England into third consecutive quarter-finalpublished at 10:45 BST

    Mexico 2-3 England

England have reached a third consecutive World Cup quarter-final and an 11th overall - only Brazil (15) and Germany (14) have reached more in the tournament’s history.

Previous manager Gareth Southgate led England to the quarter-finals at Qatar four years ago, when they lost 2-1 to France, and the semi-finals in Russia in 2018.

He also led them to consecutive finals at the European Championships.

The question is, can Thomas Tuchel take up the mantel and help his England side reach even greater heights?

When we lost Southgate as manager, I feared we would also lose the sense of fellowship and unity that he created, but it has gone from strength to strength under Tuchel. We are where we are now because of two great managers in a row.

    Mexico 2-3 England

It has to be said that the Mexico fans were not cheering when Harry Kane put 10-man England 3-1 up from the spot in the second half.

Thanks to Liverpool-born Andy Dugard for sharing this video with us.

The restaurant manager, who now lives in Florida, had the perfect view as the Three Lions captain slotted home his penalty.

Andy described his first ever World Cup match as "probably the greatest sporting event I’ll ever be at".

After having a heart attack yesterday, I decided it’s probably best to try and get some sleep then wake up to the result, so stress levels were minimum on the replay in my hospital bed. Thank you England for giving me a huge boost!

    A very wise strategy Ian.

  12. Mexico last conceded three goals at Azteca 27 years agopublished at 10:23 BST

    Mexico 2-3 England

A lot changed at the Azteca overnight.

For one, England put three goals past a Mexican side that hadn't conceded a single goal at the 2026 World Cup.

In fact, Mexico last conceded three goals in a match at the Estadio Azteca in August 1999 (4-3 win vs Brazil).

They conceded more goals today (3) than in all their previous 10 World Cup matches at the Azteca combined (2).

You have to adapt, and you have to be able to play a different style of football. That is what Thomas Tuchel brings to this group of players. There is an understanding of when to go after a game.

I think they have managed it well throughout this tournament. His tactical changes in every single game have worked and that's a huge thing to have within a changing room.

Another huge plus for Tuchel tonight.

    England

England captain Harry Kane, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "What a crazy, crazy game.

"So many things against us as a team coming here, coming to this fortress and having to get through. In the game, the red card, the penalty and so many decisions against us the whole game, but we stuck at it.

"Everyone who fought for every inch of the ball, every inch of the grass.

"This will only give us more belief and more momentum. What a special night for England.

"We scored three goals away from home against a team that have not conceded in the tournament. We played 40-50 minutes with 10 men, so whatever you say about us as a team. The one thing we do have is complete desire, determination and pride in the shirt.

"One of my favourite nights in my career."
