  2. Are Chelsea leaving it late?published at 13:50 BST

There are echoes of last summer's Isak story, with Newcastle appearing to take a strong stance and rejecting an initial £110m offer despite widespread knowledge that he was training away from the club with his former side Real Sociedad.

It continued throughout the summer and only came to a conclusion when Liverpool announced the deal two-and-a-half hours after the transfer window closed.

The Magpies had already signed attacking reinforcements, bringing in Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart for a club-record fee of £69m and Yoane Wissa from Brentford for £55m. Neither signing performed as hoped though, and Newcastle endured a disappointing season.

Alonso has used a 3-4-2-1 system in pre-season and it has been successful. It largely mirrors the set-up he used when guiding Bayer Leverkusen to an historic league and cup double in 2024.

Moises Caicedo and James were the midfield pair at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with Jordan Henderson sidelined by injury.

Romeo Lavia came off the bench, with Valentin Barco and Dario Essugo remaining unused substitutes.

Chelsea are well stocked in midfield, especially in a season without European football, and could cope in terms of numbers without signing a replacement for Fernandez if he left.

In fact, they know they need to move on a significant amount of players before the window closes.

However, earlier this summer they made a £64m bid for Bournemouth's Alex Scott and were reportedly offered Arsenal midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly. They have also been linked with Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton and Monaco's Lamine Camara.

Bournemouth say Scott is not for sale at any price and it's also understood that Lewis-Skelly, who set up the first goal in the Community Shield win over City, is keen to remain at Arsenal.

Whether Chelsea resist City's interest and fully reintegrate Fernandez to the squad or whether they sell the midfielder is likely to be one of the themes of the final two weeks of the transfer window.

  3. Neto valued at £100m amid Saudi interestpublished at 13:44 BST

Chelsea could also lose Pedro Neto before the end of the transfer window.

As reported by BBC Sport on Monday, the Blues value the Portugal international, 26, at £100m amid interest from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.

I don't see how Manchester City's midfield functions with Fernandez. Maresca preferred him making late runs into the box and getting forward, and neither he nor Anderson is a natural number six. Bouaddi could be the one to sit deepest, but he's so young, and it would likely mean either Foden or Cherki would have to be benched.

  5. Why Fernandez uncertainty has echoes of Isak sagapublished at 13:27 BST

    Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport Chelsea reporter

Alexander Isak's protracted £125m move to Liverpool dominated last summer's transfer window and there are signs that Manchester City's pursuit of Enzo Fernandez could follow a similar pattern.

Chelsea agreed with the Argentina midfielder's agent Javier Pastore in late May that Fernandez could leave the club for £120m - but put a deadline of 14 August for any bids.

Now that last Friday's deadline passed without any formal offers, the Blues have told Fernandez's camp that the player is not for sale in this transfer window.

But, as last summer's Isak saga showed, it is rarely that simple. The Sweden striker finally clinched his British record transfer move to Liverpool on transfer deadline day after weeks of Newcastle United insisting he was not for sale.

Twelve months on, the Fernandez uncertainty is not going away.

  6. Chelsea 'privately open' to selling Fernandez?published at 13:18 BST

    Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport Chelsea reporter

Reports from Spain suggest Chelsea remain privately open to selling Fernandez and that the club have appointed high-profile agent Jorge Mendes, who also represents winger Pedro Neto, to resolve the situation.

Fernandez tried and failed to secure a move to Real Madrid earlier in the summer - despite the club later denying any interest - and the situation is further complicated by his relationship with Chelsea's fans.

There were audible jeers when he came on in Saturday's 3-1 friendly win over Real Sociedad, although others responded with cheers. There was a similar mixed reaction every time he touched the ball.

Chelsea remain confident the midfielder can be reintegrated back into the squad and made a show of intent by giving him the captain's armband when he replaced Reece James last weekend.

However doubt remains over whether Fernandez will stay, and there is concern about the disruption such a late transfer would create, not least if new manager Xabi Alonso wanted to recruit a replacement.

Its going to be a tough season for Enzo Fernandez. After the World Cup, all Argentina players will be in for a tough ride from fans across the country - but when your own fans start to boo, maybe options abroad should be explored.

  8. Man City 'still keen' to sign Fernandezpublished at 13:02 BST

    Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport Chelsea reporter

Manchester City, managed by Enzo Fernandez's former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, are still keen to sign the 25-year-old and believe the London club still want to do a deal.

City, who are also in advanced talks about a £85m deal for Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, want to bolster their midfield after Rodri agreed a move to Barcelona and Bernardo Silva left when his contract expired.

They have already signed midfielder Elliot Anderson for a club-record £116m from Nottingham Forest, winger Jeremy Monga from Leicester City for £12.5m and goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille for £1.7m.

If Fernandez and Bouaddi join, it means Maresca will likely to have overseen a total spend of more than £330m.

A chunk of that outlay will be funded by the sales of Rodri and James Trafford as well as the likely departures of Tijjani Reijnders and Savinho. The exits of Silva, John Stones and Nathan Ake have reduced the wage bill too.

  9. City retain Fernandez hopepublished at 12:55 BST

    Sami Mokbel
    BBC Sport Senior football correspondent

Indeed, sources have told BBC Sport that City have not given up hope of signing Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea.

Chelsea set a deadline for clubs to sign the Argentina international last week, with a price tag of £120m.

That passed without a club offering Chelsea's desired figure but sources have told BBC Sport that the former Benfica midfielder remains firmly on City's radar.

  10. Could Fernandez replace Rodri?published at 12:50 BST

According to The Telegraph, external, Manchester City could look to replace Rodri by making a move for Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez.

Chelsea would reportedly demand £120m to sell the Argentina international during the final two weeks of the transfer window.

New Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca worked with Fernandez during his 18-month spell in charge of the Blues.

  13. West Brom keen on Toby Collyerpublished at 12:35 BST

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport Manchester United reporter

West Brom have opened talks to sign Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer on a permanent basis.

I have been told Baggies boss James Morrison is a big fan of Collyer, who spent the first half of the season on loan at West Brom last season but had his time at the Hawthorns cut short by a calf injury.

Collyer featured prominently for Manchester United in pre-season, including playing the second half of last week's encounter with Leeds at Croke Park last week.

He was also on duty in Poland for the defeat by AC Milan, mainly as cover as Mason Mount was ruled out through injury.

However, it has been accepted for the majority of the summer it was time for Collyer to move on.

Newly-promoted Hull, where Collyer spent the second half of last season, were also interested.

It remains to be seen whether the West Brom situation pushes them forward.

If Utd had done the type of business they promised all last season then MAYBE we’d consider cashing in on Bruno. To do so now, with so many other cracks in the squad (LB, CB, ST, CDM) would be insanity.

  15. What shape are Man Utd in ahead of Carrick's first full season?published at 12:25 BST

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport Manchester United reporter

Michael Carrick was confirmed as Manchester United's permanent head coach on 22 May and has just concluded his first pre-season with the club.

There are a lot of positives for Carrick to take from a pre-season of five weeks and six games.

Two wins, two draws and two defeats might look average, but the benefits are clear.

There is huge potential in midfielder Andrey Santos for a start. One of three players - Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven were the others - to start every game, the 22-year-old, £48m summer arrival from Chelsea impressed with his ability to rotate the ball, his positional discipline and communication.

Like Carrick himself, there is an assurance about Manchester United's other major signing, Youri Tielemans, that should spread through the team. There are already signs his link-up with skipper Bruno Fernandes could prove productive.

It was the energised and impactful version of Bryan Mbeumo from the first half of last season that has been on view, rather than the tired one that returned from Africa Cup of Nations duty.

Heaven impressed in defence, Leny Yoro also, particularly at right-back. Amad Diallo did well in flashes when he returned from World Cup duty. The same is true of Shea Lacey, the 19-year-old academy star who clearly needs to be eased in gradually, but of whom so much is expected.

“Cashing-in” on Fernandes only works if we actually use the sale money to invest in quality players, and I just can’t see that happening at this point. We’re meant to be signing a third midfielder, not letting another one leave!

  17. Mount's injury problemspublished at 12:14 BST

One of the biggest positives of Manchester United's pre-season was the form of Mason Mount.

The former Chelsea playmaker impressed in a central midfield position, which had initially eased concerns over the club's failure to sign a third midfielder this summer.

But Mount's injury record has long been a concern and the midfielder missed training again on Tuesday with an ongoing issue, according to Sky Sports.

Mount was taken off as a precaution after pulling up in United's draw with PSG on 8 August but he hasn't featured in a match - or training - since.

I feel for Carrick, He was backed in the beginning of the window, not sure if there are hold ups or need sales it is very slow. I feel Carrick is being let down at the lack of action from the data/transfer team. I hope it is not too late.

  19. United board need to back Carrickpublished at 12:04 BST

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport Manchester United reporter

Ruben Amorim jokingly made the point on Saturday that Manchester United's press conferences are 'more boring' now he has left the club.

    That is certainly true.

Michael Carrick is simply not willing to court headlines in the same way as Amorim. He is more protective of his players and the harmony he is trying to build at Old Trafford, and knows demands for new players can imply a lack of trust or belief in those he has - and needs.

That is why his 'we want more, we need more' statement to the broadcast media last Thursday was so significant.

It is as far as Carrick is likely to go in demanding new players.

There are a lot of talented youngsters in the Manchester United squad, but they can't be expected to do the job of seasoned professionals.

It is clear they need competition for Luke Shaw at left-back and also a reinforcement in midfield. Carrick did superbly last season by qualifying for the Champions League. Now Manchester United's hierarchy need to help him.
