Forward Bobby Kamwa enjoyed a swift reunion with his former Newport County team-mates after helping Bristol Rovers claim Severnside derby bragging rights.

Steve Evans' side, beaten by promoted York in their League Two opener, took the spoils after six goals in a dramatic second half at the Memorial Stadium.

Newport made a rapid start to hit the front after just 15 seconds through Harrison Biggins' calm finish.

Both sides struck the woodwork and then Rovers levelled on the stroke of half-time when Ben Purrington nodded in after Kamwa's cross deflected onto the bar.

The hosts took control with two goals early in the second half, with Fabrizio Cavegn scoring from close range before Lee Jenkins poked the ball into his own net after a mix-up with goalkeeper Jordan Wright.

Shaquille Gwengwe's lob pulled one back after an hour before ex-County forward Kamwa, on his first start since joining Rovers in the summer, curled in to make it 4-2.

The forward received a yellow card for his celebrations in front of the supporters who cheered him for two seasons at Rodney Parade, but jeered him in Bristol.

Cole Jarvis' header in the first of eight added minutes made it a nervy ending and the Exiles pushed only for Cavegn to secure the three points by dribbling into an empty net.
