Newcastle manager completely out of his depth. No threat up front/defensively hopeless/lightweight midfield and a poor goalkeeper…all adds up to a relegation battle.

Newcastle boss MatthiasJaissle, speaking to Sky Sports after their defeat: "It was in fact a game where we were dominating, overseeing a team giving a response, we made many situations where you saw we were about to win that game until we conceded the goal.
"We need to be honest - we were shaking a bit until half-time but we showed again a good response. Second 45 minutes, really aggressive from our lads. We won the duels, unfortunately we were not smart enough in the final decision-making in the opposition box so that is something we need to work on. We need to threaten the opposition much more when we have the ball in the final third. We had the occasions but in the end, the lucky punch was missing."
On what he told his players at half-time: "Belief, purely belief because the first 30 minutes was really good, until we conceded the goal actually. It's a bit typical for a young squad really, emotion-wise a bit shaky with ups and downs during a match and we need to learn to find the reset straight away and consistently believe in the things we were doing before. I cannot say anything against the attitude but the goal is missing."
On Sven Botman's and Joelinton's first-half challenges and yellow cards: "Honestly, it was really fast, both actions. So I was in the beginning sure there was no foul from Joelinton but it went so fast. The decision-making was clear from the referee and I think they checked even the foul from Sven but I didn't see it right now."
On improving defensively: "I think in both areas, right? Because today we didn't score. Defensive-wise; I think the structure and discipline was good but not all the time and in the Premier League against a strong opponent one occasion is enough to concede a goal and that was too easy - losing a man in the box, we need to put pressure on the cross. Again, we need to be more efficient offensive-wise."
On whether Dan Burn is close to returning to his role at centre-back after being played up front late in the match: "I think you're smart enough to know this was a tactical approach for the additional time. We went all in and in that occasion, I'm aware he is a centre-back so don't doubt that.
"He is getting the physical back which is really important for him. He was quite long out but he is getting better and better physical wise. Hopefully soon we can see him again in his natural position."

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, speaking to BBC Match of The Day: "Very tough and for us it was very important after our poor start [to the season] we need to try to come back feeling confident, feeling comfortable how we are building our structure.
"The players themselves tried to be demanding to change the situation where we are. How we achieved three points in Tottenham the after the draw we did last week with Brentford, today was very, very important. We focused on this match in meetings before as well, of course we're were happy with the match we played in the Champions League but the league is the priority because through the league we are going to achieve our priority this years, so the league is the competition where we must try to be very consistent.
"Clean sheet on Wednesday, clean sheet today I think this is one thing we are speaking and wanting to improve."
On Johan Manzambi: "Skills and intelligence, both he has, and his physicality is very important as well to help us defensively and to help us try to keep the duels offensively.
"So happy. Of course another goal he has scored. Fantastic for him as well. I don't know then he was a bit tired and maybe something muscular, hopefully not much. He has been a very good impact with his qualities and his wish to join us in the same challenges and performances in the last three or four years playing as well consistency in the Premier League in the top positions as well in Europe."
FT: Newcastle 0-1 Aston Villa
Aston Villa striker Nicolas Jackson, speaking to Sky Sports after the game: "It was a difficult game. We know St James' Park is very difficult to play but we got three points and we're very happy to win here."
On Unai Emery: "An amazing coach you know. I'm very happy to be back with him and hopefully we can do some amazing things as well.
"He's amazing, everyone knows that and know he's one of the best coaches in the world and we're very happy to be with him. Hopefully we can grow together and he always helps us so we're very happy."
On missing chances tonight: "Yeah it's part of football. Sometimes it goes well, sometimes not. He [Manzambi] got the goal and hopefully next time we both score and we score many goals together."
On Sven Botman's challenge against him in the first half: "I'm good. I know the referee said yellow card but it was so high and hopefully maybe next time a red card, but it was a yellow. I nearly broke my leg but anyway it's part of football. The most important thing is we win and we won so I'm OK and he [Manzambi] is OK."

Former Newcastle defender John Anderson on BBC Radio Newcastle: "You can’t question the commitment, the desire and the work rate, it’s all there and they keep going to the death. It’s just the lack of quality at this moment of time.
One shot on target at home says all you need to know. To have only one shot on target at home, it’s a poor stat."

Jaissle must be getting nervous. Despite board support fans are getting anxious. This is not Saudi Pro League and that is showing through. Hornicek continues to disappoint against fans expectations of Pope. Today Burn looked like the only engaged player and he came on at 89. Relegation battle looms.

Aston Villa striker Nicolas Jackson, speaking to BBC Match of The Day on the win: "It was good. We know this is a difficult place to come and play but thank God we got the win. We got the three points - that's the most important [thing] for us."
On Johan Manzambi: "He's an amazing player. He's still growing. Hopefully he can be better and better every game, score goals and assist me as well. Hopefully we work together and achieve many things together."
On how far Manzambi can go in the game: "He will go a long way and hopefully he gets no injuries. For sure if he is OK and he is training hard he will go and long way and many more goals and assists - for me - to come."
On whether Villa are where they want to be: "We are not where we want to be because we lost some points but the most important [thing] is in the past, forget this game as well, focus on the next. Go game by game and we will see where we go."

So a usual start for Villa - lose a few games at start of season, get through to international break and then go from strength to strength. Starting to work out how to play with each other, another top six finish and time to include them in the Sky 'Big six'

Aston Villa goalscorer Johan Manzambi, speaking to Sky Sports after the win: "I'm very happy to score today and I hope the next game both of us can score. But the most important [thing] is the three points."
On why he decided to join Villa: "The team was really good. I played against this team in the final [of the Europa League] and it's a very good team with a big coach and I knew that was perfect for me."
On being subbed off: "It wasn't cramp it was a kick but it's OK. I have a little bit of pain but it's OK now."

On Johan Manzambi's performance:
Brilliant header. He caused a lot of problems in the game by sitting in pockets of space.
He's electric when he gets on the ball but you also have to bring goals and assists and he's doing that from Aston Villa.

A moment for Johan Manzambi.
Since his first start for Aston Villa, only Erling Haaland (six) has been involved in more goals among Premier League players in all competitions than Manzambi. Three goals, two assists.
He is the fourth Aston Villa player to either score or assist in each of their first three Premier League starts after Dalian Atkinson in August 1992, Dion Dublin in November 1998 and Danny Ings in August 2021.

Newcastle one shot on target at home tells you everything.

One shot on target from our centre-back. Says it all really. We are in big trouble.

Newcastle ended the game with just one shot on target - by centre-back Sven Botman no less.
That's the fewest shots on target that the Magpies have registered in a Premier League home match since their opening game of the 2024-25 campaign when they had just one against Southampton.

There were more boos as the final whistle blew on Tyneside.
Newcastle remain 11th - above Aston Villa on goal difference - but Crystal Palace and Manchester United could overtake the Magpies with wins tomorrow.

Manzambi goal gifts Aston Villa win against Newcastle
Aston Villa continued their recent revival and stretched their unbeaten run to five games thanks to Johan Manzambi's winning goal to defeat Newcastle United.
Switzerland midfielder Manzambi came close to joining the Magpies in the summer before moving to Villa Park instead, and showed Newcastle what they were missing when he headed in Joao Gomes' cross in the 36th minute.
Emiliano Buendia nearly doubled Villa's advantage but saw his strike bounce off the left post, with Lukas Hornicek well beaten.
Newcastle failed to register a shot on target in the first half, with the home fans booing them off at the break.
But Matthias Jaissle's side made an instant improvement, with Harvey Barnes curling an inviting cross just wide inside the opening 40 seconds of the second half.
Sven Botman, who Villa thought should have been sent off for an over-the-ball challenge on Nicolas Jackson earlier on, hit a well-struck shot on the turn with away goalkeeper Zion Suzuki making a good save.
Villa came fourth in the Premier League last season, but only picked up one point from their opening four league games of 2026-27.
But they have now picked up seven points from their past three games, progressed in the Carabao Cup and recorded a 6-0 thrashing of Fenerbahce in the Champions League.
This victory takes Villa 12th, only behind 11th-placed Newcastle on goals scored.
Sven Botman was booked for this challenge on Nicolas Jackson, one of six Newcastle players to be cautioned
Newcastle made 'wrong decisions' in final third - Jaissle
For Newcastle and Jaissle it has been a tough week.
They were embarrassed 4-1 at Coventry City on Monday as the newly promoted side gained their first home win since returning to the Premier League.
Jaissle said he wanted to see a reaction from his side, but would have been left disappointed with a poor opening 45 minutes that left Suzuki untested in the away goal.
Indeed, Newcastle could have considered themselves fortunate to still have 11 men on the pitch after Botman slid in and caught Jackson, with the challenge going over the ball and catching the Senegal striker on the ankle.
On-pitch referee Jarred Gillett gave Botman a yellow card and it was reviewed by video assistant referee Stuart Attwell for dangerous play, but Botman escaped with just a booking.
In an interview immediately after the final whistle, Jackson said Botman's challenge "nearly broke my leg" but that he "was OK" and it was "part of football".
Botman was one of six Newcastle players to be booked, with Joelinton, captaining the Magpies for the first time in the Premier League, another player to see yellow.
Villa were good value for their lead at the break, but Newcastle, at least, did improve in the second half - although there were further boos at the final whistle.
Botman had scored a superb goal in the loss at Coventry and was only denied his second goal of the week by a fine save from Suzuki.
Yoane Wissa also headed over and fired another chance wide but the hosts could not force an equaliser.
It was Jaissle's first home loss as Newcastle manager as the Magpies were beaten at St James' Park for the first time since a 2-1 defeat by Bournemouth on 18 April.
Aston Villa manager Emery reacts to victory over Newcastle
The victory helped Aston Villa boss Unai Emery reach a landmark as it was his 100th in the Premier League.
The Spaniard would have been delighted with his side's performance, especially as they had two days fewer than their opponents to prepare for this match, having played in the Champions League on Wednesday.
For the first time this season club captain John McGinn did not start a league match, although the Scotland midfielder did come on at the beginning of the second half.
Villa already had the lead by then, after being the better team in the first 45 minutes.
As well as the Manzambi goal and the Buendia effort off the woodwork, Jackson also had an effort saved by Hornicek, with Matty Cash later hitting the side-netting.
Manzambi, who turned 21 on Wednesday, has now scored three goals for Villa since joining Emery's side in a club record deal of just over £50m from German side Freiburg.
Villa had opportunities to score a second goal, but substitute Ross Barkley drew a fine save from Hornicek and Ibrahim Mbaye shot wide after a fine run.
But they produced a strong defensive performance to restrict the hosts to one shot on target, to leave the north east with the three points.
