The performance was very impressive from Liverpool in terms of the pressing from the front and the energy they brought. Now it's about extending that over a longer period of time in a game - but you are going up against the Premier League champions

Fair play to Arsenal their defence was very strong. Disappointed again in Liverpool's big player Barcola, Writz and a bit Isak though not much Isak can do if this others don't create for him! The penalty was a bad decision but we still had 97 minutes to score!

  4. 'We definitely deserved to score'published at 19:17 GMT

    Liverpool

Andoni Iraola, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Disappointing for us. We definitely deserved to score but weren't able. We regret the first 15 minutes until we conceded the goal but I loved after. We changed a little bit by being more brave and aggressive and we put them under pressure. We had some chances that we haven't finished properly. Also they have been good defensively."

On refereeing decisions: "I think the Alexander Isak penalty was very clear. Everyone sees how they grab the shirt. I don't understand. I think it's because he doesn't dive. The shame is that we have to tell our players to dive. It is so clear and it is a great chance for us."

On a potential red card for Arsenal. "I've just seen one replay. I think a red card has to be more clear movement. It didn't look like a clear red card, no.

"There are a lot of positives but it's not enough against these teams. We had very good situations inside the box that we haven't finished properly but I value how we played after the 1-0 a lot."

On the momentum going in the right direction: "It's difficult to say after a loss, coming from five wins. This game was important for us and it feels disappointing."

As an Arsenal fan I can acknowledge we were lucky not to give away that penalty. What Timber was doing is baffling. Shows the benefit of shouting for everything I guess as had Isak or any Liverpool made a fuss it's probably given.

I think there was an energy and creativity about Liverpool, especially in the first half. Tactically, Arteta changed a few things in the second half which made it a bit difficult.

  7. 'This is why we do what we do'published at 19:14 GMT

    Liverpool v Arsenal (16:30 GMT)

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking to Sky Sports: "Extremely proud. It's been 14 years, that's a long time. I'm sure we made everybody attached to the club extremely proud today. Not only for the victory but for the way we've done it, the spirit we've shown. Especially considering what happened four days ago when you lose and go out of the cup against a team you are supposed to beat. That's the magical part of this game, it can take you to really bad places but four days later you have the opportunity to do something really historic and we've done it.

"The game is going to turn in a different direction very quickly. The way they attack, they can generate vertical attacks almost from a bad clearance or a bad throw, that's the quality that they have. And you have to be prepared, immediately to react to that with 60 metres to defend with four or five players running into your box. And we discussed that, we put everything into those actions, sometimes with more quality, sometimes with less quality, and we generated our own chaos.

"But, as well I think we have to give credit to the players for the situations and chances today that we didn't put away. Overall, to win against a team that is producing what they are doing, and also in the emotional state after Fleetwood, that's what a winning team should do."

On Anfield's atmosphere: "You have to go through that, otherwise you don't win. We have had previous like that in the past and hadn't sustained it. We made a penalty or misread in the box or sometimes they have a magical moment and put the ball in the net and you don't manage to win the game. Today we had all of that, we had an element of luck as well and we had the quality in the right moments as well to hurt them."

On Liverpool not getting a penalty for a shirt pull on Alexander Isak: "No, I haven't seen that."

On what this win means for the title race: "Today is too early. Let's enjoy this incredible victory with the players and staff and tomorrow we start to prepare for another big, big night in Prague.

On what the win means as a manager: "I'm extremely proud; this is something you want to accomplish. That's the challenge and mission you want to accomplish. I love it when it's something we have not done for many years. It was the same with Chelsea away and Manchester United away. To be able to beat all those, that's the purpose and motivation and why we do what we do."

  8. 'What the team has done here today is incredible'published at 19:11 GMT

    Liverpool v Arsenal (16:30 GMT)

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "This was especially for everyone attached to this football club. Fourteen years without winning here is a long time. We just said after the last few days, after the defeat against Fleetwood, that things happen for a reason and that's going to give us another spring and hunger and belief to go and do it. What the team has done here today is incredible.

"It was very fluid at times, we generated six or seven chances. But the game becomes very chaotic once we misplace passes, a clearance, these guys are running at you. It's incredible the ability they have to generate vertical attacks. But the way the team sustained that kind of game is incredible for me.

"They are in a really good moment. It was really deserved, to come here and win in the manner that we have done, I think the players deserve so much credit."

On Declan Rice's assist: "Not just that, first of all, the movement to recognise the open situation to make the overlap, the timing of him playing the two vs one in the right manner and arriving from the far side constantly in the right space is something we discussed. In the second half, we had two big chances, there were a lot of moments where the team had some incredible actions."

Liverpool were, I don't want to say too emotional, but there was frustration at not getting the decisions from the referee. It sort of got to them in the end. Arsenal managed to be able to stop the game by winning fouls and Liverpool had to go again.

  11. 'We can all see that he holds the shirt'published at 19:07 GMT

    FT: Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola, speaking to Sky Sports on the penalty appeals: "Especially the Alex [Isak] one. Gakpo was sustained holding, I understand. The Alex one is a clear penalty. You hold the shirt, we can all see that he holds the shirt. Because he doesn't go to the floor, you are not going to call the penalty. I don't understand it.

On if Isak should have gone down: "That's the problem we have with the game. Because he doesn't dive and go to the floor. The fact that you are even asking me if he should go to the floor, if he goes to the floor, they call the penalty 100%. It should be like this but it is what it is. Next time, the managers should tell Alex to go to the floor, otherwise they won't call it."

On if he will tell Isak to do that: "Yes, definitely."

  12. 'If you don't dive they won't call it'published at 19:06 GMT

    FT: Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola, speaking to BBC Sport: "We wanted another result definitely today. We are to the blame, especially from the beginning of the game. After we conceded the goal probably you had nothing to protect so you play more freely, we played more brave and I think we turned the game in the first half, we finished very well. We tried it in the second half but were unable to score.

"We had good chances - we hit the crossbar and had good situations we were not able to finish. We definitely deserved a goal.

"I loved the reaction from my players after going 1-0 down. We finished the first half very well, kept pushing. I loved a lot of moments of the game.

"We have to keep going. It is very early in the season. Arsenal are in the best of the situations but it is just the start of November today. A lot of games to play."

On not getting any penalty shouts, especially when Alexander Isak had his shirt pulled inside the box: "It got seen. There is a clear grab the shirt. Alex was just in front of him, he was going to head in front of the goal but couldn't because he had the shirt. I don't understand why they didn't call it, probably because he has not gone to the floor.

"I think the Gakpo one was not a penalty but the Alex one he was going to head the ball in front of the goalkeeper. He grabbed the shirt. I don't understand why it wasn't called.

"You have to dive, if you don't dive they won't call it."

I don't think Liverpool's substitutes had as good an impact as Myles Lewis-Skelly had for Arsenal. I was quite surprised when Iraola made them; I thought they were in a good moment when he made them.

  15. 'It was a clear penalty'published at 19:00 GMT

    Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal

    Liverpool

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, speaking to Sky Sports: "Disappointment. We play at home, we had some opportunities. We tried everything. We could have done a bit better in the last 15 minutes to get more balls in the box. It wasn't enough today and that's why disappointment is the feeling I'm having.

"When we conceded we played much better. Alexis could have changed the game."

On if Alexander Isak should have been awarded a penalty: "I think it was a clear penalty. I've seen it back and I've seen it being given. Today it wasn't meant to be.

On if Isak should have reacted more: "We have 50 cameras. Why does he have to complain when there are so many cameras. Everyone has seen it. In the end it wasn't given and we lose the game unfortunately, so well done to Arsenal."

On the team's momentum: "When someone new comes in the building and everything changes, it just needs time. I'm pretty sure things will click and things will work out.

Still have absolutely no idea how Liverpool didn't get a penalty for Jurrien Timber pulling Alexander Isak's shirt, by the way.

Just look what Arsenal do. They are so hard to break down. The gaps between the defence and midfield are just perfect at times. It looks like you're broken down and then someone gets back into just being in the right position. They take such pride in it.

  19. Arteta 'thinks I can do more for the club and shirt'published at 18:50 GMT

    FT: Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice speaking on Sky Sports about his number of goal assists: "The manager had a really good, honest conversation with me at the start of the season. He still thinks I can do more for this club and this shirt and I think I have been feeling really good this season.

"I am so happy for Havertz because he deserved that goal and ultimately the 1-0 win. It is demanding but this is what this team does. You can only take the table seriously in the February, March games; anything between now and then, you have to just win."

Arsenal have won away at Villa Park, Anfield, Stadium of light and City ground. All places they dropped points last season.
