Right, we have just enough time to discuss two more teams undergoing a significant transition - Newcastle United and Liverpool.

Iliman Ndiaye's first comment in the interview room after Saturday's win was a bit of an understatement. He told us it has "been a long journey to get to this point".

Back in 2020, the Senegal winger was playing for Hyde United, on loan from Sheffield United.

Yes, it was only six miles away from Etihad Stadium, but it was also way down in the sixth tier of English football.

Six years on, Ndiaye is now at the top table of the game and it was a promising debut - including at least one bit of magic first half, which nearly set up a goal, and a half-chance with a flicked header in the second half, as well as some lovely touches throughout the game.

He more than suits the number seven shirt and he got a standing ovation from the Manchester City fans when he was replaced.

Ndiaye told us afterwards that he moved to the club because it's "one of the biggest in the world and who wouldn't want to be here?". He also said the prospect of winning trophies was a big pull.

Hyde United is now a distant memory and Ndiaye can look forward this week to the Champions League and a Manchester derby at Old Trafford.

Manchester City clung on to a nervy victory against the Sky Blues courtesy of a string of saves from goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Erling Haaland continued his fine start to the season by converting his third goal in as many games from Antoine Semenyo's deep cross, which came after Enzo Fernandez played through a slide-rule pass to the Ghanaian.

Playing in the number eight role, Argentina international Fernandez was given licence to roam and make late bursts into the box - he touched the ball six times in the opposition area, with only Haaland managing more with 11.

Fernandez could have had a dream debut but saw two shots blocked, before being replaced after 76 minutes by fellow summer signing Ayyoub Bouaddi.

The 18-year-old Morocco international was part of City's midfield rebuild and highlights the options available to Maresca despite the departures of Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders and Nico Gonzalez.

Illiman Ndiaye, meanwhile, became the first Senegalese player to represent City and is bound to give opposition defenders nightmares with his trickery and pace. No player attempted more dribbles in the match than his eight.

Manager Enzo Maresca said: "Enzo and Iliman [played their] first game with us and then Ayyoub and Ryan [McAidoo] their first game in front of our fans.

"That is why I said there are many reasons I am happy about our win. I think they were all good.

"Ili just had two sessions with us. He needs to understand how to move. Most of the time he was moving in the wrong way, wrong position, but he needs to learn and for sure he is going to learn."

Asked to elaborate on Ndiaye's performance, Maresca said: "When Marc Guehi has the ball and he was dropping a lot and we don't need that.

"We need him in the last third so he can be a little bit more higher. That space was more for Josko Gvardiol.

"It is the same thing in this [other] side. But it is normal and with time they will learn the way we want them to play."

Conversely, Manchester City held off newly-promoted Coventry to extend their 100% Premier League record and continue where they left off last season - toe-to-toe with Arsenal - albeit under a new manager.

Erling Haaland scored his third of the campaign and his 300th City goal in his 368th appearance.

While Antoine Semenyo's assist was his 50th goal involvement in the Premier League (37 goals, 13 assists), the second Ghanaian to reach this milestone after Jordan Ayew (67).

Summer additions Elliot Anderson, Enzo Fernandez and Iliman Ndiaye made strong appearances but it almost felt City were clinging on to a point by the end of the 90.

So how rosy is it for Enzo Maresca's side?

Coventry have lost their opening three games without finding the net for the first time in their history, with manager Frank Lampard winning only one of his past 20 Premier League games.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day after the loss at City, Lampard said: "I don't think we deserved to lose. As the game went on we grew, of course they created chances but the boys did great, I'm disappointed we didn't get what we deserved which was a point.

"We have played the two toughest teams on paper. All you can do is control the performance, the boys grew and the pressure we had in periods of the second half was great progression from Arsenal two weeks ago.

"There was a real organisation to the team, Ethan [Pinnock] came in and was great. There were not too many moments when we were on edge, I am really pleased with our lads and the fans showed what they thought of the performance.

"We should take a lot from these three games. Our season will be defined more by the games against likes of Hull, which was disappointing but we have plenty more games to come."

Hull City's form puts the results of Coventry City - another promoted side, who went up to the Premier League as Championship winners - into harsh context.

Frank Lampard's side have lost all three matches, including at home to Hull, and have failed to score in any of their games so far, although they have been away to Arsenal and Manchester City.

Saturday's 1-0 defeat at City did at least show that they can dig in and battle with one of the very best side's in the league...

Let's not discount the roll that Sergej Jakirovic's Hull City side played in Saturday's hard-earned draw at home to Aston Villa.

The promoted side entered the third round of fixtures as one of only four Premier League clubs with a 100% record after two games.

They had every opportunity to keep that record going against Villa.

The majority of Hull's attacks on Saturday went through Mohamed Belloumi on the right wing and he almost gifted a third win from as many matches to the Tigers with a stunning effort.

The Algerian winger, 24, has shown in the opening weeks he has the quality to make an impact in the Premier League after starring in their promotion campaign.

But it was not just Belloumi who threatened to inflict another defeat on Villa.

New signing Mohamed-Ali Cho forced Villa stopper Zion Suzuki into a great save after combining with Oli McBurnie in the 89th minute and, not much later, McBurnie himself failed to make proper connection with a Ryan Giles cross with the goal at his mercy.

But sitting just two points behind leaders Manchester City with a clean sheet and unbeaten after three matches is not a bad position to be in for a club that avoided relegation to League One on goal difference only last year.

Otis speaking about Spurs, but his remarks could easily refer to Aston Villa as well.

Both managers are grappling with big changes made to their squads over the summer, for differing reasons.

Thumbs up for Aston Villa's Unai Emery, thumbs down for Roberto de Zerbi at Tottenham...

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery spoke last week about his side needing time to "re-build" and made a similar point after their draw to Hull on Saturday, when speaking with BBC Match of the Day:

"The players who joined us need some adaption. Some our adapting quicker than others. In everything we are building, we must try and add the players who joined us in the direction we want."

Fans are yet to see summer additions Johan Manzambi and Ibrahim Mbaye in action, so it may be too early to judge where Villa are at in terms of their attacking output this season.

But with Emery at the reins and fans seeing the potential in his new squad, it might just be a waiting game.

Aston Villa arrived at MKM Stadium on Saturday still searching for their first shot on target, goal and point of the season - against a defence who were yet to concede this season.

So it was always going to be tricky for Unai Emery's side to find a way past them - but with some better finishing up front, three points could have been theirs.

Nicolas Jackson's movement caused problems for the Hull backline and Villa created enough openings while generating an expected goals (xG) of 1.74, compared to Hull's xG of 0.58.

Yet they still lacked the cutting edge Ollie Watkins would have provided in the past seasons.

The striker's departure to Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal in the final week of the transfer window was always going to leave a void and Villa continue to search for a new identity after the arrival of a host of new names.

They broke their transfer record twice to sign forward Johan Manzambi and Jackson while also buying Senegal winger Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris St-Germain for £47m on the deadline day.

Manzambi is yet to feature because of injury while Mbaye was an unused substitute on Saturday.

Villa will regret not capitalising on a good first hour - summed up by Emiliano Buendia's gilt-edged chance in the 54th minute when Zion Suzuki's superb 70-yard pass released George Hemmings, who cut the ball back for the Argentine to blaze over.

In the end, Emery's side were fortunate to escape with a point as Hull finished strongly and went closest to finding a winner.

And early signs are that Emery's new-look Villa will need time to reach the levels that took them to a fourth-placed finish and Europa League triumph last season.

Winless and goalless, Aston Villa match Roberto De Zerbi's Tottenham for one of the poorest starts of the 2026-27 season.

But even worse, Unai Emery's side haven't hit a single shot on target in 270 minutes of Premier League football - the lowest total on record by any side since 2003-04.

It's perhaps not surprising that Villa are struggling so much already this campaign after selling a large part of their squad this summer, including their two top goalscorers Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins. But is it all bad?

Ok, I feel like I have said this before, but from one "work in progress" to another.

We are going to rattle through some of the other talking points of the weekend now.

Whichever club we turn to next could probably be described as a "work in progress", as that term applies to pretty much ever team in the Premier League other than reigning champions Arsenal...

However, given my colleague Paul Birch raised the point, let's have a look at two teams, like Spurs, that are also yet to score a goal this season.

This is only the second time in Tottenham’s history that they have failed to score in any of their opening three matches to a league season after the 1974-75 campaign in which they avoided relegation by a point.

Despite such heavy recruitment in attacking talent, their 0-0 stalemate with Nottingham Forest marked the first time they failed to have a shot on target in a top-flight game since April 2022 against Brentford under then boss Antonio Conte.

However, it’s not just Spurs who have struggled to find the back of the net so far. With Coventry City and Aston Villa also goalless, 2026-27 is the first ever English top-flight season to see as many as three teams fail to score in any of their opening three matches.

Spurs did at least pick up their first point of the season at the City Ground, but their tally of 80 points from their last 79 league matches is under half the 168 points rivals Arsenal have accrued from the same amount of fixtures.

The bulk of Spurs' £350m summer spending was on midfielders who aren't particularly known for their goals - scoring 12 between them last season:

• Sandro Tonali - £100m from Newcastle
• Mateus Fernandes - £85m from West Ham
• Savio - £75m from Manchester City

Currently, it is loan player Omar Marmoush leading the Tottenham front-line.
