    I’m sick of hearing that Fernandes’ kick is somehow equivalent to Foden’s. Fernandes kicks towards the ball, with his laces, into Foden’s bum. Players get kicked through the ankle/shin/heel/bum/thigh every week when blocking the ball. Foden kicks with his studs into Fernandes’ stomach out of anger.

    United fan - red for Foden, didn’t like the way Fernandes dropped but was more contact there than the Mainoo elbow on Enzo in the 2nd half. Fernandes yellow, petulant but not dangerous.

    I can see why they've given the red card but I think, as a football fan, you don't want to see a red card for that. You look at it there and you're thinking Phil Foden hasn't kicked him with any amount of force.

    He's almost brushed Bruno Fernandes with the side of his leg. He hasn't gone with his studs like he's going to hurt him. I think the sensible decision was to award two yellow cards.

    Here's what Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca said about referee Michael Oliver's decision to send Phil Foden off:

    "After the red card the plan changed completely.

    "The spirit, effort, togetherness of the players has been fantastic.

    "I think it was a red card [for Phil Foden] to be honest, but also in the same action for [Manchester United's] Bruno [Fernandes], not just for us."

    I support neither Manchester team. The Foden/Fernandes incident indicates, in my opinion, a need for retrospective reds in the case of obvious violent conduct missed or dismissed by the referee. I'm not advocating a review of the whole game but incidents like this should be reviewed post match too.

    Phil Foden became the first player to be sent off during a Manchester derby since December 2006, when referee Graham Poll showed City forward Bernardo Corradi a second yellow for diving in the 90th minute.

    Corradi's red came too late to affect the game, which the hosts won 3-1 at Old Trafford.

    Both should have been sent off for violent conduct. Utter disgrace that Fernandes got away with no punishment as he was the instigator.

    City fan here. Yes Phil's was a red. He kicked out. But Fernandes should have at least received a yellow, if not a red for kicking Phil while he was on the floor. We got away with one with the goal. But so have a lot of others.

    Let's take a closer look at the first of the big calls made by the match officials.

    Twenty-three minutes into the derby, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes fouled Phil Foden in an effort to claim the ball off the Manchester City attacker.

    With Foden on the floor, Fernandes appeared to kick his back, before Foden kicked his own leg into Fernandes' midriff from the ground.

    Foden looked utterly shocked as referee Michael Oliver showed him a straight red, leaving City to contest more than an hour of the derby with ten men - while Fernandes was not penalised.

    Erling Haaland's goal helped Manchester City win a highly controversial Manchester derby at rivals Manchester United despite playing with 10 men for more than 70 minutes.

    City midfielder Phil Foden was shown a straight red card for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes and United followed it with a period of dominance, hitting the post either side of half-time.

    But City scored the game's only goal on the break in the 60th minute when Haaland tapped in Josko Gvardiol's low, deflected cross at the back post.

    Haaland had immediately been flagged for offside but a lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) check ruled the Norwegian to be on, while the offside Enzo Fernandez was not deemed to be affecting play as he stretched to connect with the cross before it reached the scorer.

    The result continued City's perfect start to the Premier League season under new manager Enzo Maresca and moved them level on points with Arsenal at the top of the table.

    United dropped points for the third time in four league matches and stayed 13th.
